I picked my the Daylight GS-4 yesterday and it runs very well. It is the slowest engine on my roster (other than Lionel NS genset) with it running smoothly at 1 smph forward (not lubed yet). Beautiful engine with multiple whistle and horn sounds. S09 is very interesting sound effect. Workmanship is very nice especially with the stars on the drive wheels having a hollow center. It would have been nice if the pilot truck wheels were whitewalls as the drivers are done. Glad I bought the engine.

Congrats! Did you get the small lettered or large? Pix?

Can you please post a video of your new GS-4.
Steve, Lady and Tex
I was very impressed with this engine also. I have an older protosound that I upgraded to PS2. I wanted a new one when I saw and heard the PS3 version. The sound file is excellent!

I'm loving mine. I'll try to get a video up soon for those who are asking.
Winrose - Sound # 9 is really cool!
The black GS is awesome too! I've been looking for an excuse to buy one for my home layout
Dave
Yes please!!...
Guys, here is a video of the new MTH GS4. Sorry for the low quality as I used my cell phone Galaxy S4. I have a much better HD camcorder but just figured my cell phone would be the quickest way. As you can see it's a really sharp looking/sounding engine.
Enjoy!
THANK YOU MATT!
Thanks a lot! It looks great! I'm getting the scale wheels version with the small lettering. Can't wait!
The sound file is excellent!
Dave
I agree, I usually don't like the sound files in MTH steam engines, but this new PS3 sounds awesome.
It really does sound great! Especially #9 (extended whistle sound) I love Lionel engines but usually try to go with MTH mainly because of the crew talk in Lionel drives me nuts - I do understand people like it and it's cool but me personally I am not a fan of the copy that ovaaaa roger that I'm going to start this big boy up etc etc...lol.
MTH uses real crew talk sometimes like on my favorite diesel engine which I think this is the best i'v heard so far in a engine..if anyone has heard better please let me know would love to check it out - listen to this and let the video play through to catch all crew talk sounds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-Xn90XH08I

Does anyone else with the GS 4 have an issue that it starts up in conventional (misses DCS watchdog signal) upon track power up. I can make it go to command by issuing a startup command and it runs normally after that. Also does anyone have a GS 4 that starts up normally?
Thanks for posting the video. Great stuff. I did notice that Salinas was mispronounced by the voice actor MTH used for the PFA sequence.
Best,
I noticed that too....
Great Engine and great sounds. Nice TT too
Beautiful locomotive - thanks for the video. Layout is not too shabby either...
Curious about the 'rapid fire' bell. Is this prototypical for a steamer? I remember Mike's original scale (Proto 1) Hudson that had a really nice clear 'swinging bell' sound. Many of the newer bell sounds seem muted by comparison?
I think that what you are calling a rapid fire bell is a solenoid actuated bell, as opposed to a bell that is hand pulled by a cord.

Best,
Ever since Gordon Lightfoot's version of "Me and Bobby McGee" this has been a popular way to mispronounce it.

No solenoid, at least I've never seen a "solenoid" activated bell....air pressure is what is used. The clapper is swung via air pressure to hit the bell. See a video HERE

Yes, it is for the SP Daylights (SP4449), also for the UP 844 and Challenger #3985, as well as all the 4000 class locomotives. Many, many "modern" steam locomotives stopped using "swinging bells" and went with the air actuated clapper INSIDE the bell.

Winrose,
I don't have that problem with mine. I also read about your post in the DCS forum. I wonder if something just isn't seated right in the tender or wires running to close to something else. I'll watch out for this and if it comes across my bench I'll share what I find. Also try giving the techs a call at MTH to see if the know about it. I'll be interested in what they have to say.

For those who are interested - Here's a video of my new GS4 in case you didn't see it on my other post on this forum.
I enjoyed the video very much, Matt. As others have commented, great sounds for an MTH engine.
I also liked your cat looking over his/her shoulder at the GS-4.
Great looking engine! Thanks for sharing a video! May have to add this one to my shopping list.
I got mine a few days ago, runs and sounds great, Good Job MTH. Large Letters Southern Pacific.
As far as I know the last time MTH released the gs4 was in 2007. besides the ps3 and the sound file, how is this one better? Has anyone noticed any improvements worth mentioning?

Does MTH usually correct this with a new sound file??
Matt, They might do it. In the total package---it is a small thing. It is a beautiful engine while sounding and running great.
Enjoy!

Did I hear the sound of a coal stoker coming from that GS4? That OIL-burning GS4?
I have the (black, non-skirted) model, but I don't run my MTH stuff all that much, and I have not noticed one way or another. Big sound slip-up, if I heard correctly.
---------
FWIW, there is a town in Kansas named SALINA (no final "s") that is indeed pronounced
"sa-lyna". I knew of both towns and had to look up the pronunciations. So, maybe, the employee who did the Protosound recording is a Kansan sneaking one in for the home team.

I didn't even noticed that but I can live with that ...lol
