I would like to add one of these to my roster, but may not have enough space on the siding where I want to place it. The description in the catalog states that it is 30" long. That seems kind of long to me when the Challenger is 32". Perhaps someone that has the Proto 2 version might have some idea if this is the right length? Thanks!

The MTH catalog is correct. My PS2 model was 30" from the rear coupler to the front of the pilot (I have added an additional hole in the drawbar in order to close couple the engine to the tender, plus I removed the Electro-Coupler and installed an O Scale Kadee coupler). I also measured from the rear tender wheel to the front Engine Truck wheel, and that dimension is about 26".

My PS-2 ATSF Northern 4-8-4 is fully 31" over the couplers.
