My recent MTH heavyweight passenger cars are having coupler issues. At first it was one car, now it is three of the four cars in the set. I hate to ask MTH again for more replacements, as I did get one truck with coupler, which is the only way they take care of the coupler issues. Anyone have any ideas? Is there a tweak I can try to elminate the problem? Thanks!!

Hello Jeff B. Heartlein....

What was the stock number (label on the box) of the cars ?  I have a set of MTH heavyweights and the trucks and coupler die-castings are still good.  My set stock number is 20-4061.  How recent is your set. If I was you, I would try to find a set of cars from E-bay and take the trucks off and put them on your set and you would have spare parts to boot.

No I would get back in touch with MTH since I just purchased this set in August, and all is under warranty. Thanks for your suggestion though.

The problem with the couplers on this recently purchased set is that all of a sudden the knuckle just opens up. Right now it is happening as the train comes up a grade. Not in the same spot either; and about 98% of the times. When I have the knuckle closed, I use my fingers and tug on the closed knuckle, and seldom does it open, yet as the train moves about, the coupler(s) suddenly just open. If I have to, I will contact MTH and mention I have two more cars with the problem. They have sent me a complete truck for the first car I told them about.

Since these couplers are on the latest cars, they appear to be the latest coupler design, and I don't think you can wire them shut or band them. They have the tab on the side, and all you have to do is push the tab on the drawbar towards the back of the car and the coupler opens. These couplers will couple a car very nicely, at slow speeds, but they are opening up on me. Last night the couplers were opening on a down grade and on level track. We thought there was play on the larger tab on the bottom, used for the uncoupling tracks, so I taped them down, and thought maybe I found the culprit, but the cars uncoupled again. Very frustrating for cars that are normally $90 a piece. I certainly can't see buying the add ons to make for a longer, and much desired, passenger car train!

OK, but like I said, this is the new coupler design, what is being wrapped to keep them from opening. And since I am getting frustrated, why should we as consumers pay $90 a car and have problems!!!!!!!!!?????????

Ahh, the dreaded uncoupler problem.  Randomly striking in the most unpredictable fashion.  No manufacturer is immune.  For all the technological achievements no one has ever announced the creation of the bullet proof coupler.  I'm afraid it's rubber bands and twisties if you want to maintain your sanity.  Don't try and fight it.  This battle is one that can't be won.  BigRail

Well, there is tab and slot.  No good looking, however.

But for the prices on this stuff, I agree.  It needs to work!

There is a pin that locks the coupler closed it is held at engagement with a spring, the spring isn't strong enough to resist the pulling force on the kunckle and it pops out releasing the jaw. Like everybody else my solutions run from rubber bands to super glue depending on how mad I am and what's quickly available.
