Happy Weekend All,

Haven't seen any videos yet of MTH's new 4-8-4 Santa Fe Northerns, so figured I'd share a quick video of mine (she just arrived from Mr Muffins Trains (thank's Steve)):

  • This engine is LARGE...she's maybe an inch or show shy in overall length compared to my Vision Big Boy.  I was actually taken back a bit when I removed her from the box initially. 
  • Detail is fantastic, love the whistle cords and sprawling pipework on top of the boiler, and the tender is really something else!
  • MTH has really stepped up the sound sets on the steamers (whilst not as "bassy" as Legacy), I'd fancy to say this is probably one of their best sounding steamers (whistle / chuff / background sounds).

Very nice! I noticed the sounds on the recent issue G5 were were better than my PS3 H10s. Your Northern sounds even better. Hopefully the Mohawk continues the trend.

I would LOVE to see the S.F. 5021 in Sacramento in person and touch it.   We live about 90 miles north but we don't have a car and we have a clean driving record and current DL and being on fixed income makes it very hard to get a good running car or truck, SIGH.   I will be posting more pictures of more work done on the Hudson soon.  The Hudson is coming out well (slowly).   The S.F. 5011 class 2-10-4 is my favorite and the Dreyfuss Hudson being second.

I almost pre-ordered the 2926 because its being restored to run again and I've been to see it in Abq, NM. The MTH wireless drawbar still holds me back... sounds much better, looks awesome....but that drawbar. Im just not sure.

And then there's the whole DCS thing........

These SF are very good looking. No doubt about it.

Take a chance - that wireless drawbar has been out for awhile..... when hooking up the drawbar, I suggest one lay a towel down and place the engine and tender on their side and hook up the drawbar. Squeeze the plug tight. Then right the thing; place it on an unpowered track and you're good to go. 

Realizing this will start a whole conversation about the drawbars I didn't intent, they are the usual suspect when someone is having engine problems. The good news is they are easy to replace. Stiil, IMHO, a lot better than that fat cable that was used before.

Did you know, the first steamer with the wireless drawbar was the WM Challenger? They sure picked a big one to start with!

At a recent visit to the California State Railroad Museum I saw both the Santa Fe 4-8-4 and The Santa Fe 2-10-4 outside on display for all to see.  They have both been painted black and numbered.  They are not in the Museum but closeby; about 1 block away next to the river and the riverboat that is docked there.  

These are very large locomotives!  The bells and headlights have been removed for safe keeping.

Thanks to all at the Museum for allowing railfans to see these engines closeup.

I bought the premier version numbered 2926.  I had not run it in a couple of years so I took it out to the club on Thursday.  Playing with the quilling whistle was a lot of fun.  I use the WIFI app with my tablet to run on DCS and playing the whistle is great.  There are 3 tones which you can vary by using the simulated whistle chord on the app.  Lots of fun to make up your own whistle calls!

Oh I agree. I have a RK Santa Fe Northern from the late 90s PS1 and it pulled a long haul of K-line coal cars like it was nothing. I suspect the latest version of the RK Santa Fe Northerns have better detailing than the one I have.

I'm sure the detailing on the Premier version is outstanding, museum-like quality!
