A while back at topic was started that showed a pile of MTH production samples that a certain entity bought from MTH and was going to do a large, public auction offering for.  I'm not here to promote their interests, but to follow up on what has been seen (for those interested and willing to seek).

When I first heard about all of these cars, I was skeptical about how truely "rare" they are or if they were true "prototypes", but knew the basis for their availability from MTH.  What they are in effect are the first cars that are produced for a given production run and sent to MTH for approval, prior to running the entire production batch.  In essence, the large majority of them are no different than the actual production run cars that you could have bought from your dealer.  When these cars were sent for approval, they were marked up with a marker pen on the bottom of the car and have a loose "approval" tag looped onto the car.  What was more curious and interesting was where a car might have been rejected and thus having this one car made that might be different from the actual production run.  Thus far, I've not seen any this way (though I may have missed one/some) and feel that there is a curiosity still to paying attention.

What has been more interesting, particularly for updating my MTH Product Reference Guides, has been to see the bidding action on many very hard to find cars that have been seen in the overall group put up thus far.  I'm interested to confirm that my books maintain accurate product availability ratings and seeing the level of bidding interest in certain cars, I'm pleased to confirm the accuracy of my information.   It appears that many of the bidders are perhaps working from a knowledge that certain hard to find cars, which have had little opportunity to be purchased up to now, are making an appearance through this large offering.  Many common cars are going without bids, but many of the truely hard to find cars are seeing some very high winning bids.

One of the rarest of all MTH items is currently up on an auction:  The Mistui Steel Coil Car.  This might be the only chance for the general hobby to have a shot at this car.  It's already going high, but it's a special item.

Going forward, it'll be interesting to see if other rare items come up from this large pile of cars.  I know I'm paying attention, as the collector in me is looking to fill in some holes in my collection, but I've already seen some very tough to find cars go by without bids, while other items have gotten some serious action.

It's interesting.  At least to me as an MTH fan and collector.

I searched for a long time for the MTH Ohio Central caboose with no luck. I wanted it to go with the SD40-2 diesel locomotive. It was brought up, on this forum, that OC items had some of the lowest production numbers. When the caboose finally appeared on eBay, I bought it for much less than MSRP. It just happens to be a production sample. Now, I see there is another listed from the same seller.

Hi Larry...I'm sure you're right.  Over the course, thus far, of probably 600 or more items, some would have to be.  My personal interest in an item would provide interest to look over each photo.

Just what kind of change was prompted by the "rejection" would have to be checked.  If an item came in for approval with a wrong color or decoration applied, these types of cars would be real prototypes and special cars to buy.  With the modern use of design and graphic software though, the number of items that get produced wrong is very, very low.  And in some cases, the expectation of it being right may have lead to a quick look approval and subsequent release.

I was curious and almost bid to win the infamous "Reading and Nortern" hopper that was offered in one auction.  This wrongly spelled car, has the "approved" tag on it.  A piece of ignominious history there (unfortunately) for the signee.

The auctions have offered up some tough items to find though.

Steve, I always check for newly listed MTH items on eBay.  Most of my collection is MTH with some Atlas and Lionel cars.  I did recently purchase one of the MTH Archive prototype cars.  It is 20-98369, a BN flat car with bulkheads and pipe load. I would like to find some of the flat car stakes and put a simulated wood pole load on board.  I happened to see that type of car and load in Tacoma on a BNSF train several months ago. We do have a lot of pole manufacturers here the Pacific Northwest, so it is a common car to see.  I have also been trying to collect all of the MTH Thrall all door box cars.  So far I have acquired 19 of the 25 cars.  The Plum Creek Lumber all door car is quite elusive.  One recently went for $160 on eBay.  The other car that was difficult to find is the Idaho Forest Products all door car.  I did purchase one here recently for $85 on eBay.  This morning there is one listed for a BIN price of $49.99.  One just never knows.

I don't regard these as too collectable, and judging by how many go unsold, I don't think others do either.  They are basically asking MSRP which is more than I'd be willing to pay.  I guess maybe there's a chance of finding a piece that is near impossible to find elsewhere, but MTH generally reruns things often enough that one could get the same piece in the near future.

Marty do these guys also have functioning engines as well there at York.  A few Years ago I got a Production Sample of an Scale 0-8-0 Switcher from Kirk at Just Trains it has a QSI Reverse Unit and Whistle with Blowing Smoke,.  I myself would like to find a couple of more of these Production Samples for some custom engines I am considering doing.

Personally, I own many of these cars.  I think they are a great car.  To my narrow scope, I think only MTH has ever made this car type in O Gauge, right?

I have never seen any manufactured by any other manufacturer other than MTH.
