I have a MTH Railking 1105 N&W Class J with Proto Sound 1. All functions work just fine except PSA. All the sounds while in the PSA mode work as they should except there is no talking. PSA engine sounds work in PSA and the three bells ring and the engine moves forward. When the speech is supposed to occur there is brief silence. I have done a reset of the engine with a new fully charged battery and a reset with the BCR that was in the engine. I still have no speech in PSA. All the other Protosound features and sounds work as they should. Any ideas as to what the problem is and how to fix it?

Early MTH protosounds in '95-'96 had no station announcements. Judging by the stock number you gave, your engine probably fits into that category.
Well I enjoy the sounds of a locomotive, I never much cared for the PSA announcements — sounds like the perfect setup you have there,
MTH's PSA sounds have had an interesting evolution, the later ones involving some pretty cool conversations and just maybe showing MTH's sense of humor. On the cool side is the SNCF Chapelon Pacific, which plays some fairly extended conversations -- in French naturally. On what may be the humorous side is the CN F-3 from which the conductor speaks with an American Deep South drawl, which I would not expect from a Canadian.
The box has the model number MT-1105. This model only had horn and bell. At the time of purchase the board was upgraded to one with PSA,etc.
Finally, I got smart and did what I should have done to start with--look it up without relying on faulty memory! My model is the same as yours. The full catalog number is 30-1105-0. The 0 indicates that the model was not made with PSA sounds. I see, however, that you had it upgraded to include PSA; perhaps the sound chip that was added has failed. Finding another for a model that old (1996) may be the challenge, but I suppose that a good repairman could do another upgrade. Good luck! Here's the model on the MTH web site: https://mthtrains.com/30-1105-0
I would agree that is the original number. Mine was upgraded at the time of purchase by pulling the original boards out and putting new boards in providing full Proto Sounds 1 in. Somewhere I have the box that the kit upgrade came in.
The only issue is why doesn’t the engine talk in PSA mode?
Is the talking on a separate chip?
I'm assuming that it is on a separate chip. However, we all know what the word "assume" means! Check out Chuck Sartor's profile page (he was the first to reply to your posting) and contact him directly by email. He's a great repairman and should know the answer for certain.
Thanks
Just sent Chuck an email
Just sent Jim a email. I explained that his conversion at the time he bought the engine was most likely a QSI upgrade and did not have voice announcements yet.
I opened up the tender and took pictures of the boards and sent the pictures to Chuck. To me it looks like a three board stack. If that’s the case it has PSA but had no talking. It has been a while since I ran that engine. It is unusual that it has the silent periods where my Premier J has talking.
Your pictures never came through. Like I said, early QSI upgrade kits did not have dialog. 2 different systems and the processor chips are not interchangeable. Later QSI upgrade kits (Proto 3000) that have full compliment of dialog and sounds. QSI kits died off in the early 2000's when command control started taking off.
