Is there any way to reset a MTH PS1 sound chip?  I have a good PS1 card set, all functions work with the chip from my PRR T1 loco in it. The problem is it needs to be in a SD70MAC. I do get the diesel engine sounds to work, but that is all. There is no movement and when I try to do a function 18 reset, I get a "clink" sound after the 2nd raise/lower sequence of the power handle and all sounds stop until I shut off power & turn it on again.

Is there a way to reset the chip, or is it too scrambled?

Thank You for any information.

John,

First things first:

1.) What transformer are you using?  It matters, significantly with the oldest boards.

2.) Before proceeding to (3) below make sure that the battery is good.  If it's white replace it immediately.  Power the unit up, smoothly moving the throttle up to near the top of its travel.  Let it sit for 10 mins.  At that point cut the power quickly.  If the sounds play on for more than 5 secs before they go quiet then the battery is probably OK.  If they go quiet instantly then you need a new (green) battery, or BCR equivalent.

3.) When you power up from being off for five minutes or more move the throttle smoothly up to 10 VAC and leave it there for about 30 secs.  Are you getting sounds?

4.) After that lower it smoothly down to around 8 VAC. You should get a metallic clank followed by a woosh.

If you don't get these the board set has a problem, or you need to try another transformer.

If you do, then hitting the direction at this point should get the thing moving (unless it has previously been locked in neutral).
