Hello Forum, I just recently started to test my new mth subway sets. 2 of them which are new and never been used before, The mth R21 and the MTH R32. 1 is used, the MTH R40. So all trains ran fine, The R21 though. Has problems. When ever I give power to the tracks the train would light up, But no sounds come from it. its just mute. Maybe after about 5-10 minutes of waiting the cab lights finally come on and the sound comes on and the train can finally move. It go foward, neutral and backwards. But all of a sudden after about 10-15 minutes of running it, it just stops and makes no sound again. Now after about 15 minutes of waiting, The sound still did not come on nor the cab lights. This is really fustrating as I brought this subway car for an expensive price from ebay.  I doubt it can be a dead battery, I opened the powered car up and there was a battery inside. the Mth R32 has not been ran for about 10 years, But it still worked MUCH better then the Mth R21. the train is protosound 2.0 the tracks are lionel fast track and the transformer is lionel CW-80. Please help would be appreciated! thank you! Also I have a video to show you how it looks like. I always run this set with its other 3 cars and I tried everything. Powering it up by it self, With only 1 car and the whole 4 set, Still no luck. Hope some one figures out the problem, Thank you guys!

It sounds like an intermittent power problem. The good news is it doesn't sound like a problem with the PS2 electronics. If it was, the engine would most likely not work at all.

There are a few things that you can try:

  • If coach lights in the power car stay on, you can skip this step. Clean the wheels and pickup rollers with track cleaning solution or isopropyl alcohol. Do not clean the wheels with traction tires.
  • If coach lights in the power car stay on, you can skip this step. Spray contact cleaner (not WD40) into the pin in each pickup roller to remove any possible corrosion. If you don't have contact cleaner, use a drop of light machine oil.
  • Use an ohmmeter/multimeter to test continuity between the pickup rollers. If there's no continuity then at most only one pickup roller is working
  • If still no joy, remove the power car's cab and inner gray cover. Trace the wires from each pickup roller to where they come together in a wire nut, and then on to the PS2 board. Pay special attention to any inline connectors that may be loose, and any flat spots in a wire where it may have been pinched and possibly broken inside its insulation.

Be careful inside the engine - it's crowded!

First, if you're concerned that you may not have enough experience to open up the car (I though that you'd already done that) and trace wires, perhaps you should find someone local to you who does. That could be a friend, a local hobby shop or an O gauge club.

If you or someone else does desire to trace wires, just start where the wires from each pickup roller enters the car through the trucks. Then, follow the wires until they come together and then go on to the electronics, looking for what I described above.
