Just for my own amusement, I thought I would look at a version using O-48 FasTrack as a minimum, so you can reuse your straight sections and perhaps your crossings if you already have them.

  • The O-48 minimum gives you a wider and more comfortable access area in the center, and obviously accommodates your O-42 minimum equipment.
  • The three-track alignment at the bottom gives you a neat 3-track straightaway, and allows for easy access to the center using Lionel's lift-out Extended Truss Bridges (neat engineering).
  • This design is 6'8" wide by 12', but of course could be expanded to 8'x13'; let me know if you are interested and I will do a version in that width and length and will add a siding and a couple spurs.   For others with less space, this smaller version may serve.
  • Expanding to 8'x13' would allow an O-60 minimum layout, so you can run O-54 minimum equipment.

With a passing siding creating a 2nd route - an outside oval, so two trains can work around each other.  And one spur.   I would probably work in two spurs off the bottom track in the corners (O-72 turnouts).

Access and reach are excellent, all turnouts are within easy reach.   The center "operating well" is quite generous, another spur could be worked in off the inside track encroaching into the center area a bit.

The addition of an O72 cross-over creates a "middle-track" loop of O60 minimum.  So now one can "kick-back" and watch two trains run without oversight, one on the new middle-loop and one on the outside O72 loop, and still have the thrice-around route for when you want to run it.

Lionel's lighted Yard Tower and Work House with sound fit nicely between the tracks at the crossings.
