I have intermittent power with the lead engine.  It is the only powered unit. When I turn it on the car lights are dim then trips the brick. Could it be because I'm using the smoke fluid. A free cleaning the wheels and track with q tips and a so propyl alcohol and don't use the smoke after a while I can get it running again.  But it's very frustrating a b d my MTH 040 steam engine just died after only a few Christmas layouts so I'm train less unless I spend a hour cleaning and trying and finally getting the ABA unit to run. I can't afford to fix either any ideas if the ABA unit c could have a short or think it's the smoke fluid ? Please help

Thank you.

Possible smoke fluid issue, but in the absence of any real information, I would be speculating as to the actual issue(s). I suspect a short because it is obvious that this should not occur. I would re check every single wheel and make sure everything is clean and neat. Then I would not use the smoke function/oil and see if this makes a difference. Further, if you have too, take the shell off the lead unit and see if anything is amiss. Sometimes things get loose or out of sorts and that can cause a short. The other units should be checked in this manner as well. If you are not sure about this, then do not remove the bodies of the locomotives. Instead, contact MTH directly and ask to speak to a service tech. Yes they are busy, but I have had such problems as well with previous MTH locomotives and the guys up there at MTH were very helpful at helping me to determine what was actually wrong.

If all else fails, it may become less expensive to invest in a really inexpensive set that you can depend on for now until the matter can be resolved. After all, one cannot be train-less......

Hope all works out for you. Pete
