Just got a call this morning from Brentwood Antiques, my LHS.  I now have it still sealed in the box.  I know that I have to open the box and try it out.  I wasn't expecting it until August sometime.  Maybe I'll just look at the box for another day or so.  The Pan Am passenger cars were in the same shipment.

Can't wait to see a video! NONE of the train shops in my area ordered any of these SD60Es. I was surprised as I thought they were supposedly a hot item. The one owner said he hadn't heard that lol. He said the WM H9 2-8-0 was supposed to be a hot item but he can't sell the one he has.

The shop that I got it from ordered 7. As far as I know 5 are sold. There's a picture on Mr Muffins trains from last Sat. He's my long distance "LHS".

Realize it is hard to be a store owner though I'd just guess the market for a Norfolk Southern Veterans SD60E is much larger than a Western Maryland H9 2-8-0?

That's very odd.   Everybody here knew these were gonna be hot from the moment NS unveiled the prototype from their paint shop... long before both Lionel and MTH had even announced their plans to produce the O-Gauge model we were all eagerly awaiting.

Just a few observations since I've unpacked this Engine.

Flawless paint job with great colors & design.  Not sure if they match the prototype or not.

All controls are under the rear fans.  Not obvious but handy.

Comes with a short manual.  The full manual is not on the website yet.

Sounds pretty good but need to adjust volume down a bit to cancel out some vibration.  Dialog with CEO of NS is a different touch.

Not impressed with sides of trucks compared to SD-70ACE.  not sure as to whats on the prototype.

Ditch lights are on Front & Rear.

036 radius Not able to verify.  Will try on some 031 jogs however.

Smokes well.  Smoke comes out of the side vent in front on the smokestack when standing still (not sure if this by design). It does come out the stack when running.

Veterans design was my main reason for buying.  (USAFSS 1964-68, Syracuse Univ. Russian Lang., Okinawa)

OVERALL IT'S COOL !!   JUST NOT MY FAVORITE ENGINE YET.

Same reason that I ordered the Lionel version of this engine(USAFSS 67-71, X1, X2,   6917th 68-69,  Tuslog Det 94 69-71).

Sorry for the mini thread hijack.

Sorry for my poor quality videography.

The more that I run this engine the more that I like it.  The rear number boards are nice.  The side trucks do have good detail, but it's hard to see because it's black.  I tried it through an 031 switch on the way out of the yard and it derailed at the end of the short video. (A new construction project in the future!)

Once again sorry for the quality.

even the box is beautiful..

Well, the longer you wait, the better. These things need to ripen. And depreciate the right amount.

One option that I sometimes use: take the engine out, leave it in its wrapping and not look at it, and then put the box somewhere where I can stare at it for a couple of months. That way, I can have the thrill of unboxing, the thrill of staring at the box, and then schedule a later time for the additional thrill of unwrapping. I usually put that unwrapping event on my cell phone calendar, and then do a countdown, which provides additional thrills. I have to go to the bathroom a lot during that time, though.

I also just leave a lot of things in the box and never open them. It's a real rush, and besides, that way my kids can advertise the items as mint-in-the-box when they dump the stuff in a few years.
