I use the standard MTH steam smoke unit with shorts posts on most of my upgrades.  If that won't fit, then I dip into the well for a smaller unit.  Here's how I mount them in brass steam.  I JB-Weld a spring to the bottom, I solder the stack extension to the small screw-in removable funnel, and then I slide the smoke unit in the front.  After it's in place, I screw the stack extension in from the stack.  The boiler screw comes up right in the spring, this keeps the spring centered, and the stack extension obviously keeps the other end in place.

This allows easy removal of the smoke unit for maintenance, and we all know that will be required from time to time.
