IDK Gary, I don't buy MTH engines, at least not newest of the new. Maybe have a look at some of the big YouTube channels that have some that run other whistle steam engines to compare. I think Eric's Trains has had a few of the earlier MTH engines with whistle steam over on his. I do agree with you, this does look very tame almost like the fan is running at a quarter of what it should. I would think it would have more of an umph to it much like some of the really good Lionel ones do. Do you have any in yours that you can compare, or not as yet?

Most likely, there is just some condensation of the smoke fluid in the outlet path. Also note how heavy and thick the smoke is, because this is a freshly filled smoke unit.

So normal within the normal variation of experience, between a just filled smoke unit producing heavy thick white smoke, that then does not shoot out with high velocity, vs later on, a lighter grey smoke that is much drier that will shoot out with higher velocity through the tiny smoke hole exit path.

Also, since MTH uses their smaller smoke unit for this function, the motor size for the fan is the same but the impeller and it's fins and diameter are much smaller so less static pressure of air is produced.

So it could be attributed to being filled right then and there? I'd say ask Steve to do another quick video to demonstrate it better, just to settle the steam whistle effect. That would be a better selling point overall for him as well as however many models he has ordered for sale.

I have found while using the quillable smoke on my MTH Reading & Northern Pacific that the small hole that was drilled out in the whistle must be checked every so often because of some of the fluid will build up in that small opening.  I usually just give it a good blow while I have the dome off.  It usually clears and works great.  I then get a nice flow going through the whistle.

Like any smoke unit, the smoke effect changes over the amount of fill but also how recent the fill.

And yes, a recent fill generally does tend to make a dense heavy white smoke, but again, the secondary issue is, that same heavy white smoke tends to condense in the path-especially any horizontal leg of the smoke path. The airflow then blows up this "puddle or drop" into a wave that intermittently blocks and reduces the velocity of the smoke. At this stage, that makes for an even heavier denser smoke as seen in this video.

Lest we forget that MTH hasn't said jack squat, nor has a dealer raised the issue of the bad segment known to exist in these sound files. I'm just saying, if the smoke unit operation is a deal breaker on a selling point, what about the known sound file problem that largely is being blown off or ignored?

I would imagine it is just that it was just because it was just added to it. I know when I run mine, I usually fill up before running about 10-15 minutes beforehand.

About the sound files, well, I don't know anything about MTH's sounds other than I don't like how some seem to sound all alike. Granted I don't know if the engines are fairly similar(talking sounds overall, not whistle). I do remember Eric doing a review on whistle sounds of one of the MTH engines he had(number of years ago), and that actually sounded pretty good, even he said so. This was before the app got into full swing, so maybe the quilling wasn't as good as it could be, but the whistle sound itself in that particular model sounded about right for the engine. I believe Eric had said that people thought the Lionel version was off with the whistle sound. This would be maybe before 2017 or so, not all too sure. I'd have to go back and watch his reviews to figure that out.

My theory on why more people are not complaining and dealers seem oblivious is that either people are not running with DCS and thus unable to enable quilling whistle, and/or because the DCS remote and how quilling is enabled and uses the scroll wheel, are less likely to then also have it enabled with doing the PFA sequence.



Or perhaps folks aren't obsessing on this minor issue the way you have been.  I've witnessed the volume of replies you've made regarding this issue.  I thought it was less than courteous how you blew up the chat in the Trainworld Live Event with MTH with this among other things.  

The reason there aren't many complaints is more simple than you think.  Most people don't use PFA all that much...  Does't have anything to do with them using the remote or the App.  They just don't encounter the issue and are too busy enjoying their engine and not using PFA.

I'm certain MTH is aware and will fix this at some point.  Can you give it a rest until they get to addressing it?

  Yes you are probably right about using the app for the quilling of the whistle.  I have the remote and it is a little challenging to do.  But in a little time it does get easier.  Yes there is a small amount out condensation of the smoke fluid in the whistle but like I stated about just a little blow and you are good to go.  As far as the sound file I hardly use the PSA and it’s is not a major concern.  But I hope MTH at least will address that issue for you.

I like the sound of that whistle.  Guess Mr Muffins needs to blow down that stack.  Glad it’s a one off issue

I agree with you on this.

I've been a buyer of MTH engines for 25 years and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've activated PFA.  I also have Legacy engines with whistle steam and never use that. I just turn on track power with a transformer throttle, watch the trains run, and listen to their sounds, as I do when standing trackside along the local railroad. I also recognize that these features are important to some people and, since they paid for them, I agree that they should operate as advertised. I expect that MTH will get this fixed. But, most important to me is that MTH is continuing to produce its high-quality locomotive models and other O gauge equipment.
