Hi, every so often there are posts about why people are into this hobby. I was reminded of what my connection was this past weekend.

My Mom gave me an award that was presented to my grandfather upon his retirement from Southern Pacific. When I was small he used to tell me stories about his railroad. I had an HO set that I would set up at his house and he would sit there with me and just watch it go around the track.

I know most of you are into O because of your first Lionel set that you had as a kid. I do it because of the memory of my grandfather. Just thought I'd share.

Bob

Both of my grandfathers, my deceased father, three uncles, and one cousin all worked for or currently work for the railroad.

My 7 year old loves trains, and I love to tinker and build, so it's something we can enjoy together!  And they're just cool.  I have morphed into building some web sites at my job, and I'm always amazed when something electronic does what I ask it to do, lol.

My grandfather started building HO kits in 1947 and passed it onto my uncles and my dad.  We were a pretty solid HO family until I discovered scale O in 2003.

I have fond memories of running 100 car plus freight trains in the attic layout my dad and I built.  It was 24x26, had two full yards (one 8 track and the other 5), 4 main lines, and operated on two levels.

My grandfather worked for and retired from the SP in Houston.  Mostly in the Englewood Yard.  He started on as switch-man, and retired as foreman.  Was offered Yard Master and other management jobs but never wanted them.  Strange thing is both his sons, my father and uncle, retired as CEO's of large companies.  He told many stories, I can't count them all.  He is definitely part of the reason for my love of trains and the inspiration behind my screen name.
