My daughter Alexa, a college freshman, came home for winter break a couple of weeks ago and asked me for help.  She had a class project where she had to make a 2 minute video on someone, portraying a particular interest or something about them.  The assignment, I guess, was a sort of introduction to using a camera, editing video and assembling a finished product.  She thought my train layout would serve as a great visual and make for a good story, so that's what we did.

She said she got a good reaction from her professor when this was submitted.  And everyone back at school she showed it to thought the trains were "cool."   So here's an unvarnished look at what I do and why I do it.

Hey everyone, I’m really grateful for all the very kind comments.  I’m glad you enjoyed the video.  Alexa did do a nice job, I have to say…I was very proud of her.  To those of you who have been featured in DVDs and interviewed on TV about your own home or club layouts, I can appreciate the thought and care that went into your videos because it’s not so easy talking about our obsessions when the camera’s turned on and a question is put to you.  Especially when you are trying to keep those answers short and concise for editing purposes.  It can be hard to contain your enthusiasm!

I was somewhat overwhelmed with your compliments…sure, I expected to get a few responses about the trains themselves or some piece of scenery or “why didn’t you hire a real carpenter?” lol  But the warm responses about my daughter and the bond we share was very very touching, and I was humbled to read them.  Totally unexpected and greatly appreciated.

One little trivia note.  Alexa has indirectly made another “contribution” to the Forum or a Forum-related event .  Last summer, as the date was approaching for Alex Mallaie’s Open House on Staten Island, I asked her to make me a cake to look like an intermodal shipping container.  Which she did, completely from scratch.  This was the end result that made its way onto Alex and Dina’s dessert table.
