I bought an MTH 750 brick yesterday from the LHS, great price. It is a newer style w/ polarized plug. I have an older one that does not.

Came back and tried it on the layout before I take down the track. Engine went from outer loop to inner and when it crossed the block barrier, I saw sparks. Shut things down after a few feet of travel.

Sure enough, when I checked the polarity, this is one that MTH guys wired backwards....showed 40.7 V  when hooked to the Z1000 I had on the other channel. I was lucky that there was no engine damage to the PS2 engine. I am used to polarizing/checking the non-polarized units like my PW ones, but did not think to check this the first time.

Just a word of warning to anyone who may put themselves in the same harm's way in the future.

I was not clear in what I said Barry, thus your confusion.

I had/have an older 750 w/o the polarized plug that I am  not currently using. I have marked it years ago for DCS use.

It was not in play with this. I bought the new one in case I needed it, and liked the fact it was already "factory phased." I pretty much use the 1000's now.

But imagine my surprise when buying a new one to get rid of the problem with the old one....I wound up with one out of phase anyway.

Thanks for the reply. Reversing was my thought...but I have to file the prong. Dale thinks that is a bad idea.

Dave, I responded to the adapter on the other thread.

John, I am pretty much "on track" with you, that was my original plan, and to mark the plug like my PW units.

You might not have visited the Electrical Forum where the other post is, but here is what Dale wrote as a reply to that suggestion;

" The problem with filing a plug is that if you had a fire or anything happened not even related to the plug,the insurance company could have an excuse not to pay your claim. Not that it does not work or is not a solution. Dale H"

The sad part is......he is probably correct! Hope no one's house burns down with all of those PW units out of phase. I know, they don't have prongs that need filing.

Still, I think that will be my course of action. Even easier than Dave's adapter....since all of my adapters are polarized also! I guess I could file that down!!

Thanks to all. Still waiting for that "perfect reply" from some electrical engineering guru. Greg
