Alex, is there a slot on the flywheel side like there is on the gearbox input? I don't see one in your pictures.
Normally there would be to accept a dogbone. You can find dogbone shafts at a hobby shop that specializes in RC cars.
Pete
Lionel sells them too, change the search to part number / name and search "dogbone" all lengths will return.
mike
How about that reply from the one and only Mikado!
Alex, have you checked at Petsmart?
Alex,
You could always that it out of Dan's engine..........wait a moment that will not work.

I think Mike had the answer, just fine a suitable dogbone at Lionel.
Alex, figure what is the exact length you need. I have a box of them.
I am just asking for educational reasons how would you measure the dog bone shafts to get the correct length needed, is it to the edge, or to the area where the slot or is it something else?
Hi everyone
sorry I just saw all of your replies I will check the size tomorrow and get back to you.
Thanks everyone!!!
ALEX
Back in the stone age when Lobough, All Nation and Alexander were making O gauge kits, some folks used rubber hose sort of like automotive vacuum hose between the motor and the gear box with some success.
Precision Scale Co., Inc. shows parts under Universal couplings. Page 330/331 of the paper Steam Locomotive Catalog No. 3.1 . The on line Catalog page numbers are not the same as the paper book. Parts are listed alphabetically. From the link above click on Detail Parts and go to the O, On3 Steam Locomotive Catalog, which is a pdf down load.
How about NWSL:

This next link should open the catalog for dogbones and universal joints:
Wow Alex! Looks like the" Gunrunner" gave you "da shaft"!
