I just received a new to me Legacy MR #261.  It may have had a rough journey here.  It arrived with two stanchions loose from the boiler and the front handrail detached.  What glue would be best to reattach? Would you take the boiler off and repair from backside?  Not like the old pre / post war steamers with nuts securing the stanchions.

Thanks for your advise!

I would use Cyanoacrylate (super glue).   If you can apply a tiny drop to the stanchions and insert them without messing up the finish, that would be preferred over the pain of pulling the boiler.   Of course, the problem isn't pulling the boiler.   It is stuffing wires and everything back in the boiler.

Not familiar with the loco - in construction detail, that is - but if the stanchions can be inserted back into their holes - they have holes, I guess?, I would use a good CA glue. Gorilla CA claims to retain a little "give", to be less prone to shearing breaks and temperature changes, an occasional problem with "super glues".

If the stanchions are actually broken, this probably won't work.

DAP makes a rapid setting (about 30 seconds) CA superglue that I have found very easy to use and sets quickly as opposed to many CA glues (although you can use an accelerator). It's available at Lowes and probably many other fine stores.

I would put a little glue on a piece of paper first and then use a toothpick to apply a dab of glue to the piece to be glued so that you can control how much glue goes on and not get it where it doesn't belong.
