I have a problem with a proto 2 early MTH F3 A-B-A set.  The two A units are powered and the B unit is a dummy.  Today while running trains I had a derailment with one of my trains on the layout so I pushed the emergency stop button on the hand held controller to kill the power.  After restarting everything I noticed that the trailing A unit was stuck in conventional mode and would only run in reverse.  It does not respond to commands from the lead unit or DCS controls.  The lead A unit still runs fine by itself and responds to all DCS commands.  However when I put the two together again and power up the track, the slave unit starts to run in reverse while the lead unit is still in neutral.  I can't do any resets because the slave unit will not go into neutral.  I assume that the reversing command comes from the lead unit.  Apparently the trailing unit has no way to go to either neutral or reverse by itself.  Hoping this is not a board problem.  BTW, the battery is OK according to the message on the controller.

Stan, yes the trailing A unit will take off by itself when power is applied to the track.  The problem is exactly like someone else described on that other thread.  So it looks like there must be a failed part in the slave a unit.  There is a so called factory authorized MTH repair out here but I have had mixed results with them.  On the other hand it would probably cost too much to ship the whole kabootle to GGG plus repair and ship back.  I will think about it and see what I can do.

Ray, I can test the slave board by itself and repair replace, no need to send the whole train.

I recently did this for a gentleman in Canada.

This is based on the train was running fine, Lead A runs fine by itself, and it was the dynamic short that caused the problem.

So if you can remove the board from the Trail A I can repair.   E-mail is in my profile.   G
