The 691-ssmu is a "smart smoke unit"
It is a newer design with an 8 ohm element that is designed to work with TMCC in conjunction with an 8 volt AC regulator. It will make puffing smoke when wired up correctly.
The second one I don't recognise, but it looks older.
If it has a 27 ohm element it will run off track power.
Email me offline if you want the wiring diagram for the smart unit.

The SSMU actually should have a 5 pin hookup. Check closely.
If the other is a 3 pin, the outer two pins are likely hot, and the middle one is ground.
It will run on AC so polarity does not matter.
Test it on about 12-14 VAC to check if it operates.

your wright.its a 5 pin..
Rod id got your email..was wondering what volts the smart unit is..was thinking on hooking up a 6 volts battery to test it?.on the 3 pin smoke unit..on top of the board say going outside in,,3rd rail ,neg,smoke..looks like 2 hots..are they both feed by track power?
The one with the three terminals has two of them common, you can connect to the center pin and either of the outside pins.
