I’ve had a little train related project sitting on the back burner for a while because I wasn’t sure which way to go as far as web design and / or web hosting.

The basic premise of my project is a train operations game that I originally built in excel, primarily for calculations, etc. to make layout time more fun/interesting for my kids.  I thought it would be more fun to share within a group of people.  Google sheets came to mind, but that’s not really the direction I’d like to go.  I’d like to build it out in a website.

From my research, excel language doesn’t translate well / easily to other more friendly web languages or google sheets for that matter.

Ideally, there is something that I could essentially upload my excel workbook (with pivot tables) into, but I’m not sure if that exists.

My requirements:

1. Free/low cost web design application

2. Must be able to build formulas within the calculations (“if” statements, random number generator, database to record scores, etc)

3. Would be nice to have it in a language that could be taken from a webpage format and easily translate to an app format.

4. Ideally use excel for calculations, but would be open to recreating it in google sheets if it could be uploaded to a webpage.  I am less than a novice at actual coding, so writing the formulas in web code doesn’t sound like much fun

Thanks for any advice!

My experience with integrating any Microsoft Office application to your web project is kludgy, difficult to get right and likely will require the computer client will need a copy of the MS-Office program.  I'd try to avoid it if you can.

The other suggestion I have right out of the gate is to try to define what your requirements are without tying them to a particular product (like excel) or technology (like spreadsheets), unless of course, you really do need to.  One example would be that a client has Excel workbooks that need to be processed a certain way and they aren't able or willing to change.  The first 3 of your requirements do this.  Your last one is Excel centric.  Do you really need to use Excel to calculate or can simple math do the job?

Just my $.02.  If you want to talk about it in more depth, feel free to email me.
