Hi guys, working on an MTH 1 gauge F3 AA set with PS2. AC, DC, DCS but no DCC. I realize this is the O gauge forum, but the knowledge here will probably help.

When bench testing the locomotive on dc power I get no sounds, so I put in a new battery, still no sounds even after running for about 40 minutes. My understanding is that I should get sounds even with a dead battery or no battery when power is supplied to the locomotive. Also, the locomotive gears are quite but I noticed that they would run for a second then stop and start up again.

Guessing this is the sign of a blown board or similar. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Mainly wondering if it's worth buying and fixing or if that is even possible given the age, MTH's current parts availability, etc.

MTH Item # 70-2013-1

Thanks guys for the thoughts,

Todd

First, is the volume pot turned up? Try turning it while the engine is running. Set it around half volume and see if the sound comes back.

Are the wires to the speaker connected?

the audio amp might be blown if there was a short.

Don't run it until you check this further!

Look at the speaker for any signs of a crumbling magnet. Test it with an ohm meter for internal shorting. Finally, test the speaker (when disconnected) with a battery to see if it makes a clear snap when power is briefly applied. If it sounds like static, it's probably bad.

If the battery is fully dead, the engine may not play sounds like you think. No battery would be better than a dead one!

Is the battery fully charged and working?
