Finally got my Atlas USRA double sheathed boxcars. I cant even remember when I ordered these it has been so long.

The Elgin Joliet and Eastern railway used 300 of these boxcars that were in service from 1902 until around 1937. They were built by the Illinois Car and Equipment Company, numbered 7000-7299. According to Atlas they were designed in 1918, so perhaps this is only close to the cars used by EJ&E and not an exact match. These cars are available in 4 road numbers from Atlas, 7333, 7358, 7587, and 7696. These are Master Line pieces from atlas and I paid roughly $45 per car.

These are the first cars I have ever purchased from Atlas. The first thing I noticed was the heavy weight of the car which is nice. The second thing I noticed is that these cars are quite durable. As I finished admiring the first car removed from the package, I set it on my coffee table and started to place the plastic insert packaging into the box. While doing this I did not realize that #7696 started to roll. I noticed after it hit the floor though. Sounded like dropping a hard cover book from about 3 feet. Thankfully the car had no damage. It did fall onto a wood floor by the way. I am mostly blaming this incident on the weight of the car, and not my stupidity.

I have heard on these forums time and time again how Atlas makes some of the best pieces in the business. I got my first taste of this as I started to look at all of the details on these cars. The quality and sturdiness of the steps alone are much better than anything else I have.

It didnt take long for me to get these into the basement. After daydreaming about them on my layout for years, its nice to finally see them for real.

If you weather cars, I am sure that because of the detail, Atlas cars must be very difficult. I think the detail in the shot below is incredible.

For some reason I cannot take a decent picture to save my life.. but anyways heres a shot of my 6 newest additions, including 2 new MTH premier EJ&E Transfer Diesels.

Overall I could not be happier with my purchase. The challenge now is to build a layout that has a level of detail that lives up to these cars. If you are modeling steam era EJ&E, or midwestern freight lines, these cars are a must have.  I believe that these cars were made in the past by Atlas, so this is a second release.

Thank you Atlas for producing these exquisite Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railway items. I am looking forward to more EJ&E items from Atlas in the future!

EJ&E has a lot of great looking cars that need to be produced. Andy I am going to have to try to hunt that car down. I really need some EJ&E cabooses now, an orange one and an old wooden one would be perfect. If they would produce the steel orange cabooses I would probably have to grab 3 or 4 of them.

As for these new boxcars, they will not be at home until someone released a heavy Mikado.

Atlas also made the following EJ&E cars that I have in my collection:

#6495-1, -3 and -4 (probably a -2 also which I don't have) EJ&E 40' Steel Re-Built Boxcars #7621, #7634 & #7679.

#8302-1, -3 and -4 (probably a -2 also which I don't have) EJ&E Double Sheathed Wood Boxcars #7332, #7581 & #7695.

9302-1 & 9302-3 EJ&E Double Sheathed Wood Boxcars 2-Rail (probably a -2 and -4 also which I don't have). Car #7332 & #7581 also.

Haven't received my new EJ&E cars that were just released as yet.

Congratulations on your first Atlas freight cars. They offer dozens of different models.  I would rate all of the Trainman and Masterline freight cars as good to excellent models.

Atlas, Lionel and MTH all make a double sheathed USRA box car.  Atlas and MTH also make USRA single sheathed box cars.  In a head to head comparison I would give the edge to MTH on the double sheathed cars (they are that good!) and call it a toss up on the single sheathed cars.

In addition to the Atlas cars already mentioned both MTH and Weaver have done PS-1 40 boot box cars for the EJ&E.

There is the MTH 2--93086  http://www.mthtrains.com/content/20-93086

and the Weaver U2031

Zett,

Please, what are the Atlas O part numbers for these EJ&E boxcars? I checked with my local hobby shop this morning, and they never heard of them, nor what catalog they were in. I have searched the Atlas O website, and can find NOTHING about ANY EJ&E boxcars. Don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I would sure like to pick up 1 or 2 of those, especially that old green car, part #6495.

Are they recent shippers, from a VERY old catalog?

Thanks.

The above link is correct. I pre-ordered mine from Charles Ro at least 18 months ago. All of the other cars linked above we're past builds so it may be difficult to find them. There's a lot of old stuff I'm looking to track down, such as the ej&e mth coil car, but my bank account took a massive hit with both the atlas boxcars and the mth transfer diesels shipping 1 week apart.

Hopefully Lionel will have the shark nose legacy engines in the new catalog with ej&e paint. Im still really hoping for someone to produce a heavy mikado so I can make my great grandfathers engine. With whistle steam.

The Atlas web site is not laid out very well for finding things.  If you click on the "New Products" button on the main page, it will take you to a page with some more useful links, of which, most are in the side bar box on the right side of the page, including the link to their "Product Search" page.  Once there, I just do a search on "Elgin" and it pulls up the three runs they've done:

  • The first run of the USRA Double-Sheathed Box Car (#8302 - 4 road numbers) which looks to have been from around 2003.
  • The Steel Re-Built Box Car (#6495 - 4 road numbers) which looks to have been from around 2005.
  • And the above-pictured 2012 second run of the USRA Double-Sheathed Box Car (#8302 - 4 road numbers).

They did both 2-rail and 3-rail runs of all of these, the 2-rail versions are #9302 and #7495 respectively, and I'm pretty sure the 2-rail cars can be converted to 3-rail, as I've had some Atlas 2-rail cars converted for me in the past by a dealer who really wanted to sell me some cars.   Just did a quick search and there is a 2-rail USRA Double-Sheathed Box Car (#9302) on eBay right now.

I wish Atlas would move the link to their "Product Search" page to their main page, as those of us who are looking for info on older runs don't find it very intuitive to start with "New Products."
