Finally got my Atlas USRA double sheathed boxcars. I cant even remember when I ordered these it has been so long.
The Elgin Joliet and Eastern railway used 300 of these boxcars that were in service from 1902 until around 1937. They were built by the Illinois Car and Equipment Company, numbered 7000-7299. According to Atlas they were designed in 1918, so perhaps this is only close to the cars used by EJ&E and not an exact match. These cars are available in 4 road numbers from Atlas, 7333, 7358, 7587, and 7696. These are Master Line pieces from atlas and I paid roughly $45 per car.
These are the first cars I have ever purchased from Atlas. The first thing I noticed was the heavy weight of the car which is nice. The second thing I noticed is that these cars are quite durable. As I finished admiring the first car removed from the package, I set it on my coffee table and started to place the plastic insert packaging into the box. While doing this I did not realize that #7696 started to roll. I noticed after it hit the floor though. Sounded like dropping a hard cover book from about 3 feet. Thankfully the car had no damage. It did fall onto a wood floor by the way. I am mostly blaming this incident on the weight of the car, and not my stupidity.
I have heard on these forums time and time again how Atlas makes some of the best pieces in the business. I got my first taste of this as I started to look at all of the details on these cars. The quality and sturdiness of the steps alone are much better than anything else I have.
It didnt take long for me to get these into the basement. After daydreaming about them on my layout for years, its nice to finally see them for real.
If you weather cars, I am sure that because of the detail, Atlas cars must be very difficult. I think the detail in the shot below is incredible.
For some reason I cannot take a decent picture to save my life.. but anyways heres a shot of my 6 newest additions, including 2 new MTH premier EJ&E Transfer Diesels.
Overall I could not be happier with my purchase. The challenge now is to build a layout that has a level of detail that lives up to these cars. If you are modeling steam era EJ&E, or midwestern freight lines, these cars are a must have. I believe that these cars were made in the past by Atlas, so this is a second release.
Thank you Atlas for producing these exquisite Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railway items. I am looking forward to more EJ&E items from Atlas in the future!
