That's sucked!

Yeah, I saw this a few weeks ago. Pretty offensive.

 

And who is this guy, anyway? Must be a football thing - and I don't follow. 

Many model railroaders found it to be offensive. I don't, I think its funny, but it takes quite a bit to offend me. Stuff like that is all in fun, based on the perception of our hobby. No big deal.

No worse than Sheldon Cooper being a nerd for liking trains On Big Bang Theory. I think their both funny.

No Big Deal.  In a few weeks it'll be forgotten.

It's cute. I'm not offended. I also like the Bud Light "Real Men of Genius" radio commercial saluting "Mr. Miniature Train Modeler." There's a YouTube video using that as the background.

 

Remember, Frank Sinatra had toy trains and no one laughed at Frank.

 

Well, if you want to be inspired by someone's positive involvement with toy/model trains (truly in the most positive way possible), you just needed to watch Part 2 of the recent PBS "American Experience" documentary on the life of Walt Disney. Aired this past week and I never realized how truly great an influence trains (and Ward Kimball) had on the life and career of this legendary figure.

I hadn't seen that one yet. Unfortunately, model railroaders are not yet a "protected class" under the law. We're just train nerds, but one day we will have our revenge!

You could pretend it's a dig to HO only. 

Perhaps he told the engineer "NOT" to go into the station to run some time off of the clock. Dunce

Still offensive, Walt Disney and Frank Sinatra notwithstanding. Not a "big deal", true, and I didn't lose any sleep over it, but it's still tiresome behavior.

I disagree. I'm sick of people picking on Eli. Yeah, he made a bonehead mistake but he also won two Superbowls and in one of those runs won 4 yes 4 road playoff games while only throwing one interception. How many SBs has Romo won? If we were athletes would any of us be perfect? So give the guy a break.

I thought what the papers said about him was terrible.

I am a  big Giants fan and usually an Eli defender.

 

However, when you have a chance to win on the road against a division rival in a season that may be iffy at best, you can't lose a game on mental mistakes. If you get beat, you get beat. But don't get beat by mistakes that a 11 year veteran two time Super Bowl MVP shouldn't be making.

 

Anyways, I wonder if I can get a better rate by threatening to cancel my DirecTV seeing as how I am an offended model train enthusiast? 

Model rail roaders in general will always be looked upon as somewhat unusual by those who don't get it. However, when people come to my house they are usually interested in the trains and don't think of it as odd. Most are usually impressed with what I have. Model rail roaders (regardless of the gauge you run) are not any different than car collectors or golf enthusiasts. We all have a passion that we care about and will be looked upon as odd by those who do not share it.

 

On Sunday afternoons, running trains and watching football are both good to do. So the ad is no big deal.

 

If the ad bothers you, lighten up. There are more important things in life to worry about.

I tend to agree with Hudson J1e.

Eli has won more superbowls than; Jim Kelly, Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning, Fran Tarkenton, Len Dawson, Joe Theisman, Brett Farve, and Russell Wilson.

He has as many as Bart Starr, Jim Plunkett, Ben Rothlisberger, Bob Griese, Roger Staubach, and John Elway.

Only Joe Montana, Bradshaw, Aikman and Brady have won more.

 

Still no excuse for not watching the clock or taking money to make fun of toy trains.

Personally, I would rather have the two rings and deal with the comments.

 

Remember that Brady was done and washed up after the 41-14 beat down from Kansas City last.  Hmmm, one team didn't win the super bowl and the other team did.

Please don't forget that Starr won five championships, they just weren't called Super Bowls until the merger.

This thread is funny, though. Two days ago there was a thread that devolved into people criticizing gamers as going nowhere in life. I reminded folks that we in the train hobby are looked at as wasting time and are mocked as well. This just makes my point for me.

They won't show it in San Diego, they don't want to make the Charger Fans made at ELI.

 

 

Very nice layout.  But I HATE Bud-Light. 

 

Eli's a good quarterback, but the good ones make mistakes like everybody else. And don't be dissing on Kurt Warner--he played well enough to give his team the lead in Super Bowls late in the 4th quarter 3 separate times--and in two out of three contests the defense coughed up the game. I might also remind people that one of those teams was the Arizona Cardinals...a perennial NFL powerhouse.

 

I'm just not too worried about the way people look at my train hobby. The people who matter in my life don't mind that I play with trains, and the people who mind don't matter.

I am more offended by the use of the word "nerd" in an above comment.  Sheldon is pretty well based on someone with Asperger's Syndrome, many of which share a passion for trains.  Nerd was used to describe me in high school so it strikes a nerve with me, sorry but it does.  The ad is funny in my book and I could care less about sports in general.  Eli is good but Peyton is better, just wish the Colts would have held on to him.  

One last comment about Eli. It wasn't his decision "Not to Score " on first and second down. Whoever had that idea is just as much to blame as Eli.

I thought the commercial was funny. I got a laugh out of it. It is unfortunate but the mainstream public will always view us as weird people who spend too much time playing with toys in their basement. When do something good like open up our layout for charity then we are normal people.

It was. He said it on WFAN on Monday. He also said he alerted the sidelines that he was doing so. Someone should have put the kibosh on that. Looking at you Tom.

 

I love our hobby and couldn't care less if others approve or not. But you gotta laugh at yourself every once in a while. 

I think its funny -- those guys with the miniature HO trains are kinda odd, not like us guys with O scale model trains!

I go out of my way to watch Payton or Eli play. They are some of the very  few that I really like to watch ever since there college days.

 

The add is ok for what ever. 

 

I personally did not see the humor in it.

Name one of Direct TV's commercials that wouldn't be considered offensive to some group. 

Frankly, this entire series of Direct TV commercials beginning with the Rob Lowe ones are among the lamest on TV.  I fail to see how this series of ads would interest anyone in subscribing.

I've said it all along....HO guys are dorks!   Just kidding.......  

 

I play with trains, collect toys, run/jog, play hockey and eat lots of bad food.  Proud of all my hobbies!   The commercial made me laugh.  I'm comfortable with my hobbies. 

I put advertising in with bankers, lawyers and politicians.  Usually it's mislabeled and fairly mis-leading.

 

But my favorite commercial is the Miller Lite where the karaoke guy is buying beer and sings "Carry On My Wayward Son".

Not far behind is any of the Dollar Shave Club commercials.

 

As far as people looking at me funny or calling me a nerd when they find out I play with toy trains....

Let's see where that ranks with:

- constantly looking at a phone or texting someone in the same room

- spending hours on your Facebook or Tweeter (sp) acct so you can embarrass yourself to the internet with some photo or inappropriate comment you have to retract

- spending hours to hone your motor skill coordination on a video game

- re-living someone else's sports efforts because your lack of talent or weight

   prevents you from competing

- participating/following in a FANTASY league ( football, baseball, basketball...)

- blogging on the internet for a cause no one gives a ---- about

- taking chemicals or liquids to escape your reality

- being able to quote line for line TV episodes or movie dialogue

- reading, digesting and organizing your database of soap opera, TV drama latest     info

- watching/following DWTS, The Voice, The Batchelor, any MTV type show (except Ridiculousness)

- camping out in line for a movie ticket, concert ticket, sports ticket, Black Friday sale

- collecting beanie babies, rocks, coins, stamps, antiques, artwork, antique cars, watches, shoes, dishes, baseball cards, your prized motorcycle, covering your body with tattoos or piercings, sports memorabilia, big game trophies,.....it is a long list

- going to garage sales every week to buy someone else's junk (trains excluded)

It looks like everybody has THEIR thing.

 

So yeah, you might catch me playing with trains or watching trains on the side of the road.  Maybe reading a train magazine, following this forum, or going to a train show.

 

I can live with that.

I am glad I spent my leisure time and money the past 30 years building my miniature railroad empire.Watching the Chicago Bears lose every season is a better way to spend my Sundays?OK,Eli.  

The problem here isn't that you railroad, it's that you think your only viable alternative is the Bears! Look north, ye olde Green Bay Acme Packers have had much success and are a joy to watch (though not much of a joy for a Bears fan, I'd reckon)
