About 6 years ago I delivered a train set around Christmas from a group of us from the forum to a  needy family. I run into the mother who works at one of the local grocery stores in my neighborhood. A couple of weeks ago I was talking to her and she told me someone broke in and had stolen some things one of which was the train set her son loved. The mother is now a single mom just getting by. Her youngest son with cerebral palsy is living in a nursing home and his mother pics him up and brings him home for 3 days during the week. Her son didn't know about the missing train yet. I felt bad and I knew I had to do something so I decided he was not going to do without a train set.  I priced some sets and found a cool Lioncheif John dear diesel set with remote. I knew the NJHR have donated a couple of train sets at the club so I contacted NJHR president Ben Fioriello to see if they dealt with a dealer so I could possibly get some sort of a discount on a set.   After I told Ben the story he got back to me the next day and said.."Chris you pick up the set and the set is on the club"  WOW! I was shocked and extremely grateful of Ben and the clubs  generosity to help a mom and child in need who they never met.   This is one of the reasons why the NJHR is the best club on the planet! Not only is Trainstock a huge event for all of us but the club also has events threw the year sharing there passion for trains and bringing smiles and friendships to kids young and old.  I recently became a proud member of the club and these guy's are the best of the best! I want to personally thank Ben and the club for Their generosity and making a child and mom very happy.     Below is a picture of Mom after I presented it to her on behalf of the club.     The smile on here face says it all!

Chris,

Many if us are fortunate to be able to buy just about anything we want any time. So giving back to the community is our DNA. Whether the Schriners , the Make A Wish Foundation or helping the Boy Scouts earn badges we pride ourselves on being good neighbors.

Happy that this worked out well and it is why I enjoy being a member of this club.

Kevin

I too am proud to be a member of the NJHR, and proud of what we do. A few years ago I spent a bunch of time putting together our application to be a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and as a new member was truly astounded at all the positive things we do (and we did become a 501(c)(3) organization, so contributions to us are deductible as charitable contributions).

If you live in the area, come visit us. Or better yet, become a member. Our membership application form is on our website (http://www.njhirailers.com/) or contact Ben, me or any other member. Chris lives out of the area, and we have "associate" memberships available at half of our regular dues for people who are geographically challenged. Quite a few other regular contributors to the Forum are "geographically challenged" members, including Marty Fitzhenry and Pat Marinari.

You keep reading about the aging of the hobby and getting younger people involved. This is a great example of doing exactly that. Thank you Chris.

Gerry
