New Legacy 4-8-4/flashing lite

The flashing lights are a code.  How many times does it flash.  Read the manual and it will tell you what the issue is based on the number of cab light flashes.

Look in the back of your engines instruction manual.  It will tell you the problem based on the number of flashes.  The instructions always say try a reset, but if it persists it needs to go to Lionel service.  Sounds like maybe a problem in your smoke unit.  Just match the number of flashes with what's listed in your manual.

I looked through my instruction Manuel and found no codes list. I did noticed that it flashes in rhythms of 3 flashes,a pause, then 3 flashes.

I just had the exact same problem you did.  It took 3 or 4 pushes of the reset button before the flashing stopped.  The primary smoke unit began to work again.

Three flashes is for a smoke fan motor problem. 

Boy, most of the diagnostic flashing talked about here is the smoke unit fan.  What's with the Lionel smoke units?

The smoke fans are not the issue. It's the silly diagnostic system that's been created that shuts the smoke system down for the what ever reasons.   

My personal theory is that the system might be a teeny bit oversensitive to any excess current draw by the fan motor. If slightly too much smoke fluid is added it is easy for some to find its way into the fan housing and create some drag.

The front smoke unit on my DD35 is very sensitive to this since new (Initially it was jammed solid by incorrectly fitted wicking as delivered, so this may have weakened the motor.) and I have found that if I turn the unit off and wait a few days, the fluid disperses and it will work again.
