Hi Everyone,

I am starting a new project constructing an Oil Drilling Rig. Here is a picture of the basic idea and the top and bottom deck sheets. The model will be constructed primarily of styrene. The legs will be ABS pipe. The footprint will be 14 inches square. I will add more pictures as progress continues.

I'd make it smaller than 1:48.  A big drilling platform would be far too big for my trainroom in that scale.  1:87, or even 1:160 would look good, and placed right, create some good forced perspective.  It is an interesting project.

Doesn't look easy!

If you break down the structure there are no windows, walls or roofs. Maybe an interior house for sleeping quarters. There are platforms with large interior openings for the drilling rig and tower that are open-structure. So the steel structure usually hidden by the walls and roof are visible. This is kind of like a vertical layered bridge with multiple walkways and cranes. They are floating anchored to the seabed or supported on pylons that sit on the seabed.

Great project look forward to the completed model!

Joe,

This is not for the guy in Sri Lanka, but I am sure if they see the finished product they would probably want one. I obviously had to scale the oil rig way down. It will have some basic components as a real oil rig. Anyone that has been to Epcot has probably seen the oil rig model they had in one of the buildings. It was probably fourteen feet square.

I am glad I got everyone interested.

That, like some other industrial interior models that have been shown on here, demands really knowing the subject or doing your homework in research.  I, in

thinking how you could tie it to model railroading, could picture it in a close-to-shore

bay, with barges with railcars pushed out to it, either for the construction process, or

for maintenance.  ((I have no clue how the product (oil) gets to shore))  Wonder if

tank cars would ever be used, from shore (probably not on a barge, but that is what

I would model).

Brian,

The helicopter pad will be on the top of the building that will be going in the corner. I can't wait to build that part. I just started the building today. I had to stop today to rake leaves, clean out the gutters and winterize the sprinkler system, and take my Challenger out for one more ride.

Steve,

I will try to complete this by the end of next weekend.

Thank you everyone for your nice comments.
