Hello, I just purchased my first PS3 engine. It loads to the remote when I add a new MTH engine. However, it does not respond when I press the startup button. Nothing happens at all. I even tried to run it conventionally through one of the variable channels. No response. I know it works because it was tested before I bought it. The train store where I purchased it is closed until Tuesday. Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Barry, I did the factory reset, re-added the new engine. No change.

chessie, I questioned that when I purchased the engine today. I was told these engines did not come with a switch. They put the engine on the track and it worked fine at the train shop. So I know the engine works.

Is it possible that my TIU is old and needs an updated firm ware? I bought it around 2005-2006.

GGG, I don't have an answer for you, sorry. I might try to change the address some time. I thought I should leave well enough alone. Maybe, it was unlucky no 13 that it didn't like. When I was at the shop today, they indicated that the engines come from the factory with address 1. He also suggested trying to first start out conventionally, and then try to program with DCS. None of that worked. I had a similar problem with one of my Lionel Legacy Gensets. It took me a while to figure out what address it liked. I have another that has been sent back to Lionel. Don't know the outcome of that on yet. Maybe a bad board.

If I come up with the answer, I will post it.

Thanks again everyone.

Ok,  That is good and explains why no conventional ops.  So the other issue is only working on ID 1.

nunya, When you have the engine running with ID 1.  Let it sit in neutral and turn off the transformer powering the engine.  Does the engine play shutdown sounds or abruptly lose sounds?  G

I still think there's still something amiss with the engine even though it will run with ID 1 in command. This is very similar to a proto-2 with a weak , or no battery at all.To test in convention with a var channel the dcs signal must turned off (menu/ system/dcs set up/...)

If the capacitor is not working do you still get sounds in conventional? I'm guessing yes

In command I suspect the slightest power interruption will drop the engine into neutral

I agree. As I said earlier on this thread:

Based on that, the problem appears to be that the engine is simply not remembering its DCS ID# after being added. It keeps getting changed to 13 each time that it's added.

If that is, indeed, the case, you have a defective engine that needs to be repaired or exchanged.

nunya,

Barry is probably right about the P3 engine having a problem, however with the P3 engine always program the engine from a programing track seperate from any other engines.  Let the P3 engine sit on the programming track for at least 60 sec to charge the onboard BCR, then program your engine.  Funny things seem to happen if the onboard BCR is not energized correctly.

GGG, The engines goes through the shutdown sequence.
