The newest paint scheme VIA Rail Canada uses on the F40PH locomotives is very nicely done on the just released models.  Here are a few pics of my two units.  Very happy with the appearance and details of these locomotives.   I have now ordered a consist of passenger cars from MTH for these units.  20170306_10454920170306_10411420170306_104630

Very nice Scott! I have the new F40PH Metra engine, and it is spot on when it comes to the detail which includes the sounds as well. I rode Metra for 7 years so I'm very familiar with these engines.

I was lucky enough to find the one for my Metra line (City of West Chicago) and the conductor even notes my Metra stop in the PSA announcement. You can't ask for more then that!

I'm considering getting another one, but we shall see. I'm going to pick up the 4 - passenger car set first.

Man, I want one of these so bad! I used to ride the Metra into Homewood fairly often.

I received my two a few weeks back.  I was surprised by the accurateness of the front end of these compared to previous runs.  The rear end is not correct, but I'm not complaining for the price.  Finally my GGD VIA Canadian has some locomotives for it after all these years.  I'll post a video next time I have a run day at my club.

P42's also are getting it:

Is this scheme being applied to all VIA power or just a few units?

I saw a couple of news items that said they were applying this scheme to 22 locomotives, 18 passenger cars and the Glenfraser lounge car, which is available for private charter.

I was affraid there might have been some GGD VIA cars made at some point in the past.  I wonder how some of these great GGD sets escaped under my radar.  They are a brand one must seek information from it seems.  I keep fairly connected to the hobby, yet never saw some of these products announced or advertised.  Hopefully they add me to mailing lists after buying Train of Tomorrow, Slumbercoach car, and pre ordering Amfleets.

I am going to enjoy my MTH cars but severely miss having GGD VIA cars!  Maybe it would have been better not knowing about those..lol.

Scott,

I delivered the graphics work for the Canadian in December of 2012 and as I recall they shipped about 6 months later.  There were not a lot of VIA sets made as one could understand.  Most were in the traditional as delivered CP scheme.  We also did the CP Rail version and that only had a few orders.  I only have the 8 car set.  I recently inquired about remaining individual add-on cars in stock and Scott Mann said he was out.  Are you one the mailing list now?  While I am a consultant to the company, I get the news letters to two of my email addresses.  It keeps me on my toes too!

On Amtrak equipment to date, we have done the FL9 in Amtrak, 10-6 and 4-4-2 Pullman Standard sleepers, Pullman Standard Coaches in 4 road numbers, a few "finish sets" which were B&O prototypes painted for Amtrak, the Slumbercoach and the El Capitan in limited numbers from both the first and second run.  I still have a set of four coaches in inventory having originally bought 8.  The only set I had to pass on was the finish set.  I am hoping to talk Scott into offering a set of the Silver Meteor cars in Amtrak .... maybe if he had another few orders????

I have a custom painted K-Line F40PH in this same paint scheme.  It is actually not too far off since it was numbered 6400 and that didn't get the HEP modification in the rear.  I'll have to get photos of all of them in good light at some point when I have a proper setup for photography again for my trains.  I am thinking of turning it into a dummy and trailing my MTH versions freeing up the TMCC boards, motors, etc. for a another project.

Update.  I have had time now to get these prepped and running.  I am impressed with the upgraded details and the sounds are really good.  Excellent horn.  Love the combination French - English station sounds.  One of the things I enjoyed on the VIA TurboTrain.  Now awaiting more VIA cars to arrive from MTH to run a lengthy Canadian consist!

How about some video! I'm curious to hear the French-English sounds as that is a pretty nice touch. I finally received my Metra cars and posted a short video in another thread but will post it here as well. I'm going to pick up the Metra Car 2-pack this weekend so hopefully more pics and another video next week.

MTH Metra F40PH and Metra Cars

Thanks for posting the video, looks good. Enjoy!

I've been looking since 2019 for either of these, if you ever happen to come across anymore please let me know! I've managed to find enough cars to make "the canadian" consist, but I'm using genesis engines to pull them right now since I can't find any VIA F40PHs.

DashingDanLIRR, I was in the same hunt for these.   I found a dummy only in the earlier paint scheme.  Then I found an Operation Lifesaver version of the early scheme, but again a dummy.  I ended up using a powered Caltrains F40PH as a donor and my local shop did the work and sound file change for me.

The newer (current scheme) F40PH, I ordered because had missed the first version.  I only ever saw them once at Mr. Jimmy Sutter's store in Homer City.  I was there to pick up a pair of Amtrak F40PH and had a budget for the day.  Mr.Sutter quipped, " you need those VIA F40PHs to help you get over the mountain headed home."  Leaving there without those VIA F40's was a mistake for sure.  I made it over the mountain but spent years hunting and finally finding nonpowered units.

Hope you have some luck in the hunt.

My plan is the same as yours, find whichever one pops up (powered, non-powered, 2 rail, etc.) and just buy a donor F40PH to put the shells and trim pieces on, unfortunately no luck so far, at least I have my VIA genesis engines though!

Custom paint is an option although ever increasing in cost.  I was not planning to buy the Genesis locos in VIA when they were offered. Interests change over a few years though and when I decided to join in on more recent VIA Rail prototypes those were going for rediculous prices.   I then had a pair of Amtrak Williams Genesis units custom repainted in VIA.

There are some older used MTH Amtrak engines available for sale if you do a search for them. And newer Atlas engines of many paint schemes at some dealers. You might pick a couple up old or new and repaint them yourself or have someone do it for you. You should be able to reload the VIA sound files to what ever MTH engine you get.

Then you can pick what ever VIA paint scheme you want. The older MTH versions of VIA are really hard to find. Guys in the local club took several years to hunt them down.

I prefer the old FP9/7 and repainted a Menards engine and used a Williams F7B unit for my VIA train, early era VIA.

If anyone's ever looking to sell their VIA F40PHs consider me a buyer! Until then I'll keep looking.

I do have a custom painted rocky mountaineer that I got before finding the entire MTH rocky mountaineer set. I don't mind custom painted stuff but it's very hard to get the paint to match the original MTH cars.

Not if you hire Christine Braden.  She matches with perfection everytime.
