Can't really tell from the catalog, does anyone know if the new VL Big Boy has the dual smoke units in the stack for the alternating smoke puff feature.
On a side note, really love that Big Boy Freight set.
Thanks,
Byron

I didn't even know that was a feature. It would be awesome if it was!
I was wondering if the mount magnets for the elephants ears on 4019 are visible when you take the ears off. @Dave Olson might be needed on these questions.
That Big Boy Freight Set has my attention for sure
Wish they offered the 4019 with the set, really like the elephant ears, certainly can’t swing buying 2 big boys. They got me with the WWII limited edition car.
Are there any more differences on the 4023 LCCA version besides the smoke-lifters and what exactly are they? Strange you can get more but pay less for it. Go figure.
Will this set come in a set box? Would be a big box for sure
I can certainly reach out to Mr. Muffins and see if a custom run could be done for the Big Boy set. If you are interested in that option, let me know below so I can try and gauge the interest in such a thing.
cheers,
Byron

No, as that was a fantasy feature and not prototypical. The safety valve steam was added in place of that dual unit stack.

Thanks Brian, that is what I was suspecting but appreciate the confirmation. Though not prototypical, I really like the individual smoke puffs at low speeds on my VL Big Boy and was hoping that feature still existed.

Thanks for the assist Keith, I think I finally got my link to work as well, was having a little trouble figuring out the process.

I am interested in this option. That would make the set unique.

Individual smoke puffs is one thing, but the "alternating", i.e. between the front and rear exhaust stack, is a farce.
Please someone talk me out of getting a black and greyhound big boy…I usually never do fantasy paint schemes but that greyhound is just so sharp. I have to have the prototypical one…ugh my wallet.
Brian is correct. The alternating smoke from the stacks was removed and replaced with the safety valve steam.
I remember this being explained in one of the demos with Dave videos or maybe even a Trainworld youtube video after the announcement of the Big Boy. Can't remember which.

I can't talk you out of it because I love mine. I have the Greyhound with yellow striping in the LC+ 2.0 Lionmaster version. It is a gorgeous locomotive.
Brad
I already preordered the super set, would cancel and get one with the lifters though.

You are no help!
Guess I’m not going to Italy this year. LOL. This catalog is really kicking my ***. The more I look at it the more I buy.

Brian is correct. It wasn't a real feature. Thank goodness it could be turned off.
I'm going with 4014 oil burner version and then the 4024 Greyhound with yellow stripes, then all the passenger cars and the visionline UP yellow caboose. And the Mickey and Minnie handcar.

Include me as to one who questioned Lionel’s logic in doing another Big Boy already but from the sampling here I would say they knew what they were doing.
I'm going with the 4012 as that's the one that I've seen in person. I was going to get the one with the smoke deflectors but I watched some Youtube videos of that engine in other scales and decided I don't actually like the look.
I don't have a Big Boy so I'm pretty excited! I'm a little disappointed that this may be my only purchase of the year as it will max out the budget. But that's ok. Sacrifices must occasionally be made.

When the original VL Big Boy was offered I also had to curb other purchase but it one I've never regretted. Get your Big Boy. I don't think you'll go wrong. I'm excited to see the interest in these. I suspect Lionel could do the Scale Polar Berk, the Big Boy, and a few others on a fairly regular rotation and always sell out. Good Job Lionel.
I appreciate the encouragement @MartyE. I'm especially excited because my layout is going to have coal drags so a Big Boy style locomotive will be right at home.
A scale Polar Berk would definitely be a must have for me. I saved up all summer to buy the first run of the Polar Express back in the day. I ended up giving it to my parents when I moved out because I wanted one I could run under the tree from the couch (and didn't have money for the necessary equipment to do so at the time).

Meanwhile the original VL Hudsons are getting $1000 over MSRP on ebay.....can we get another one? using ALL of the K Line tooling...pretty please... Ryan and Dave?
I know everyone else has 10 hudsons...but.. I only have two.
Glad I don't like the Big Boy, that would cost me big time. I prefer the Challenger instead. I sort of wonder what the new next year VL Locomotive will be?
I too would like a Hudson @RickO
@Dave NYC Hudson PRR K4 next year...maybe a diesel? Maybe something they got from the MTH tooling? (please let it be a triplex)

I was thinking the deflectors have magnets and are removable?

Rick that would be a good one!

It does! But I wasn't sure if there would be big ugly magnets sticking out the side or if they're hidden.
Contacted Mr. Muffins, seems the chance of Lionel doing an entire custom set is basically zero. I had come to terms with this, and had pretty much settled on just ordering the Big Boy Vision super set. I really like the set, and especially like the limited edition freight sounds WWII car. Now of course Mr Muffins has just announced the custom runs for this catalog. One of them is the #4000 Big Boy, the OG of all the Big Boys. I really feel like I need one of these in my life. (hopefully 39 other people feel this way so the custom run can happen) I have decided to just build my own super set, of course it will be minus the WWII box car, something I will just have to live with I guess.
Cheers,
Byron
