Not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this... this came across my Facebook feed today from the Delaware Highlands Conservancy - the O&W may live on as a trail:

Be a Part of Making the O&W a Countywide Rail Trail

Whether you hike, bike, or just want a place to walk the dog, local rail trails offer incredibly scenic jaunts through the Catskills woods – and they’re about to see a major expansion.

Join local residents and officials on Tuesday, January 30 (snow date: January 31) at 6 p.m. in the Hearing Room of the Sullivan County Government Center, 100 North Street, Monticello for a Community Meeting to discuss the plan to join the disconnected sections of trails in the County to create the O&W Rail Trail. With funding secured to develop a plan and make improvements, this is the perfect opportunity to find out more and get involved!

When complete, the O&W Rail Trail will traverse nearly the entire main line of the former New York, Ontario & Western (O&W) Railway, from Summitville to Livingston Manor, connecting to the D&H Canal and trail work being done in the Town of Mamakating. The project will also include a spur of the O&W that runs from Monticello south and could reach Port Jervis.
