Last year all 4 channels of the TIU worked perfectly.  I hooked it up this year and NO POWER is going thru any of the 4 channels.  I checked the INPUT side and power gets there on all 4 ports but that's it.

When I put it away last year it was working perfectly but this year all 4 channels are problems.

At first, on the first port that I checked, that maybe the internal fuse was bad.  But since NONE of the channels have power going thru them, I ruled that out.  I mean, what's the odds that all 4 fuses would go bad just sitting in storage (dry).

I did a READ and it finds the TIU and both of the AIUs.

please offer a suggestion because I am out of things to try.  Again, to me, it worked when I put it away and that's important to know.

As always, thanks - walt

The only thing that can kill the FIXED channel power from coming through is either hitting the E-STOP key to pick the relay or blowing the fuse.

  • Remove ALL power from the TIU, aux power and all power to all inputs.
  • Restore power to the TIU input channels and aux power if you use it.
  • If there is no power on the FIXED outputs at this time, either the fuses are blown or the TIU has an internal problem.

Thanks John

Some comments from me. Considering I turn my TIU off every time when I’m not running trains to me that’s the same as disconnecting power.

I do use AUX power. Like I said when I do read it finds the TIU and both AIUs

Is there anything I can look at. Saying there is an internal problem is is helpful but I don’t know what to look at.  Any ideas at all. Have you ever heard of this.

what’s confusing to me is it works perfectly when I put it away

as always thanks. Walt

So the LED is on and has blinked the address of the unit.  As John stated fuses for Fixed, and the Var need to be turned on to fixed or set up as tracks and have the voltage raised.  Internally you could have loose nuts on the terminals on output side.

Weird all channels bad and I would make sure you are getting a good connection on the output side.  Using a voltmeter touching metal of the output terminals?  G

The light comes on. I do a raid it finds the TIU in both our our use.

I used my voltmeter to check input side versus output side

It’s odd that it’s all four channels. I could understand one having a bad connection or a bad fuse but not all four. Especially considering it worked when I put it away

Thanks for answering

This is totally embarrassing. I wish I could say I did this or I did that and all of a sudden it worked but I didn’t do anything except go down and watch the Penn State football game. I came back up and turned it on and now power goes through all for channels.

I apologize for wasting everyone’s time. Like I said I didn’t do a single thing but turn it back on and it worked. I turned it on and off in the morning but that didn’t help.

So I guess all I can say is I’m glad it’s working

again I have to say it I’m very sorry I wasted your time

I'm not going to drag this out any longer but one last comment.

I "KNOW" @gunrunnerjohn and @GGG, given their experience with this device and their extensive knowledge of it, gave what to them was the most logical explanation, and I appreciate that.  Make no mistake about it.

But here's the catch that they weren't aware of: I use a power strip and my wall-wart for the TIU and the plug for the trannie used for track power are both plugged into that power strip.  It has an on/off switch and that's what I use to control power being on or off.

The single most likely thing that could have happened to explain the unexplainable is that MAYBE I didn't turn the power off and on in the morning as I said that I did.  I don't really remember if I did or not.  If I was in error in my earlier assumption, then game on for @gunrunnerjohn's  and @GGG's explanations.

either way, as GGG wrote, I'm just thankful that it's working.  I will shelf my curiosity as to why power didn't go  thru it in the first place since that's never happened in the 15 or so years that I've been using it.

Again, my apologies for wasting people's time.  bye!

as always, thanks - walt

I could write a book just on the times that I've "thought" I did something, only to find out that my recall was less than 100%.   I've spent considerable time debugging something only to find out one of my basic assumptions about the environment was faulty, and there was really nothing wrong in the first place!    No reason to beat yourself up over something like this, I'm guessing similar situations have happened to most folks here, probably multiple times.  Time to move on and enjoy the trains.
