I have a cab-1 that no longer responds to speed control from the big red button. I have taken it appart and see circuit board but no way to take the button off. Any suggestions on how to repair this or if it can be repaired.

Are you sure the batteries are fresh? The knob is the first thing to quit working when batteries run down. All buttons will still work fine.
I have the same issue. My Cab-1 remote will not control speed. I have changed batteries. The boost, directional button work. Lionel sent me an email saying they feel it is the cab-1 and they don't have any parts for it. I don't see anyway to fix it.
Check with Dale Manquen on these forums. I believe he repairs them. Or send them to me for keeps and I'll have Dale repair them for me. One can never have too many spares.
I am embarrassed to report, that upon replacing the batteries on the CAB-1, low and behold everything is working fine. I feel like a dummy, but at least I am learning. At 69 that is getting harder all the time. The old batteries still check at 1.5 volts but are obviously still too weak to run the CAB-1.
Now i just have to figure out the sparking at the switches. I am using Gargrave with DZ-2500. The only ones that spark are the ones on track loop #3 which is powered from the American Flyer transformer through a PowerMaster.
Thanks for all the help and encouragement. I guess they really did make these toys for kids, even big kids.

Paul, make sure the wheels and track are clean. I use Goo-Gone on a Q-tip to clean the wheels and on a cloth to clean the track. Make sure to wipe them with a clean Q-tip or cloth once cleaned. Also, make sure there's no debris on the switches.
A little Goo-Gone goes a long way, I've never had it remove any paint, but keep it on the wheels only if possible. On diesels I usually remove the side frames, makes it easier to get around the wheels without having to put it on/take it off the track and rotate the wheels using the powered to the track.
