Was running our NYC PA/PB (from 1997) this afternoon and they were performing well with both horns blending well and sounding great. After awhile I was having trouble with the B unit's coupler firing separating it from the A unit. I shut down the power and merely turned the B unit around to its proper position with the coupler at the rear. When I restarted I noticed that the RS horn was not functioning with the A unit when triggered on my Cab2. When I hit '1' on the remote, sometime the B unit's horn would blow and I could blow them both by using the whistle slider while holding down '1'.  Any idea what was happening?  (these early units has 'Signal Sounds' in the A unit and early RS in the B giving us 2 distinct horns that still sound great today)

Ran out of time at the club and was unable to pursue this further today...

I remember from other forum posts that the random coupler firing was triggered by the lack of a capacitor across the coupler leads; adding a capacitor should eliminate that issue.

In terms of the quirky railsounds, I would try resetting both units to see if that synchronizes things. Beyond that, I would recommend checking the backup batteries (if so equipped), cleaning the wheels/rollers/track, and if needed check to see if the antennas or antenna leads are damaged/pinched.
