Despite being an entrenched "scale-guy" I've decided to throw together a compact, micro-type layout using RMT Beep and Bang locomotives. I'll be working from a prototype track arrangement but would like anyone's recommendation of O27 track and switches...I prefer NOT to transition or shim between differing brands...I'd like this as simple as possible yet the project will be scenic'd and quasi prototype operated. I love these little locomotives; they appear to be geared slower for running and want to see just how far I can push the envelope, in as small a space as possible, and make these "toys" actually appear quite modelganic and most important...FUN! Thanks for any advice.

I'll be following this topic and look forward to seeing your "micro" layout track plan...
Howard...
I'm getting some good ideas from this past thread on micros
If you want to keep it all 027 track & switches then check out Western Depot for their 027 track in either Lionel or K-Line as no adapter pins are needed just 027 track.
Also Trainworld may have some 027 track as well.

This is what I'm thinking of when I tear my existing layout down this fall to make my spare room a bedroom.

Marx all metal O-27 track switches will allow any type or vintage of train to run through them. Get the ones that are not bent up. Then if you buy any older trains in the future, any of them will run through these switches.
I had a similar idea a couple of years ago... a 36x36 for my O27 and beeps. I did a temp setup as a test, but ended up not building it because I was not able to get either of my Beeps to pass through the old (brown) Lionel switches. Literally not once ever, in either direction, trying all four switches. Every other O27 loco did just fine.
For what its worth, here's what I was going to do. May get back to it one day, but it won't feature the Beeps. Steer clear of Lionel O27 switches.

Here's a good read for locos for an 027 layout.
I am looking for a forum member that uses the K-Line 027 switches on his 027 layout. I believe he has good success with those letting the trains through. If I find the thread, I'll post the link.
I just built an 027 table for a pre-war Lionel Jr. The 45° cross was a pain to get the train trough(gear on wheel, 1033 cross).
It's 48" x 41". I don't like working with tubular track. I even made a set of track pliers, and I still don't like it. But, it's the only game in town for an 027 curve.
Here's another good thread. Looks like the Marx 027 switches are the way to go. Check out Jim Pollicastro's layout.
Here was my track plan...left side front main and the sidings would be visible as well as the diverging branch on the right. Rest would be hidden by scenery or backdrop. Back spur would be switching viewed through the trees and vegetation. Dead ringer for a prototype junction nearby even the sidings...loops on the right are for constant running and hidden reversing/staging for trains to pass through the one central scene junction and even switch...or just through freight or Budd passenger cars.
Dimensions roughly 2.5 x 10 feet packed with action.

Nice little track plan. Don't give up on the K-Line switches yet.
If you have an old Lionel style 027 switch that has been ruined and you don't think it can be used as is, take it down to just the tracks and add a DZ-1000 switch motor to it. The throw rail piece in the 027 switch will hook-up to the DZ-1000's throw bar. I did that to a very badly used 027 switch(could not be repaired as solenoid housing was broken off) and it works great now.

Thanks Carl. Today I purchased all the K-Line O27 27" radius switches that were for sale on *bay.

Thanks Lee...I found some K-Line O27 27" switches at Western Depot (I've never been to that site previously)...now they're mine.
Hey...I am going to scale two rail O scale and want to sell off my O27 track and switches. I have six pair of Lionel 027 remote switches, 27 straight, 24 curved and 4ea of 1/2 straight and curved. I also have two of the O27 remote un-couplers new in the box. The switches are about half and half new or lightly used. Will make someone a great deal on the lot. Let me know and I can forward email etc...
ATTETION: Edstrains...I might be interested in the two O27 uncouplers if you are unable to sell as an entire lot deal...how much for both uncouplers shipped to 32207?
Howard...
Pat Kelly,
Looks like Edstrains just solved all your layout track & switch problems in one purchase.
I still set up an 027 layout every once in a while, we had a seriously complex 027 Christmas layout for a few years, it ran perfectly, doubt I will ever sell any of it however.
Your layout plan looks great, good luck with building your layout!

Pat...send me your email and I will contact you off line. I will send you a price for the lot and shipping to Maryland. I am really going over the top...also known as Proto48. OK I like tedium and frustration in my old age...

I too am planning O scale 2 rail for the basement, the retirement project but no Proto 48 (yet )...been purchasing some O brass lately. Gots the very basic proto based (same local shortline and Class 1 interchange nearby) track plan already.
O27 is for the back room mini/micro personal challenge to keep me busy (and out of trouble) while we get the basement floor and walls prepped. Shoot me your list.
