Hi:

I have a PRR passenger proto 2 set and an Amtrak set, as well as the IRT subway set. I'm confused about DCS and backwards compatibility. I know the PS3 trains will run on the new wireless system, but I don't have any of them. The Amtrak set came with the commander hand held remote, but the Pennsy or subway did not.

I'm wanting to run multiple engines on a dedicated MTH track like I run my Lionchief sets. I can't with the command remotes, even if I bought another for the Pennsy set, because they are not unique to the engine (or so I've been told.) My question is: what do I need to run my proto 2 Railking sets on the same track?

Thanks!

Which command system do you want to run on?  Any PS-2 or PS-3 engine will run on DCS System.  They also will run on the Remote Commander set as long as they have the factory default ID.  Some times they won't especially if they were run on DCS or in for service.  Anyone with the DCS System could do a factory reset for you on PS-2 engines.  Newer PS-3 have the capability to do a factory reset with the Remote Commander.   G

Thank you all for your answers. This command thing is new to me.

As far as track power:

--does it do me any good to add the track power connector track from my two Lionchief sets on one loop, for example, one on one end of the loop and the other on the other end, or is this too much power?

--I have an old MTH z1000 power square that came with the Pennsy set. Can I use that for my Lionchief track, or is it too much power?

Regarding remote command:

--with MTH DCS do the new wifi units still run PS2 trains? Are the regular DCS hand held still available, and is there an advantage to that?

--the hand held remotes that came with the PS2 sets, they are not unique to the engine, correct? They are just infra red remotes sending power to track?

--In broad terms does the DCS system = Lionchief in its function?

Thanks. Your answers are helping my understanding.

PDX, the wireless unit will run PS2 as well as PS3.  Regular remotes are still made and available.

Over the years, there have been several types of IR control that came with ready-to-run sets.  Early ones controlled conventional only (they preceded DCS--I have one somewhere).  More recent ones utilize a small portion of DCS technology.
