Hope to have the Rock Island GP35's up in a week or so...

The track is original 1957 Super O Track.  This is what it looks like when it is clean (not the dirty/tarnished stuff we normally see at train meets).

This is pics of the new Super O layout underconstruction.  Some of you remember the old layout (RIP)

Naturally I cant be called 'SUPEROBOB' and change my track system for the new layout!  So since I have a barn full of it, I decided to use it on the new layout, which will be about the same size as the old layout, but with opportunity to grow larger later.

What is the roadbed under the Super O track?

The curves in the distance appear to be wider than O-36.  What is the diameter/radius and how hard is it to bend Super O to wider radius?

Thanks - Ken

Hi Ken-

Yes it is wide radius, my tightest is O-83" and the widest is O-144".  It is possible to bend with simple tools and a template.  Just a few tricks to it, but if you can bend gargraves, you can with super O.

The roadbed is Vinyl Bed.

One question. Do all the horns sound alike or different?

I picked up the Chessie GP35 a few weeks ago and run it with the similar looking Legacy GP30 from a few years back..

Sounds are slightly different but similar enough to make the pair sound fantastic.

The Rio's are very nice, and they look great next to the old TMCC Rio GP30's

Talking to a dealer a week ago, they're showing still available at Lionel, so dealers can get them if ordered.

I hope the orange paint used on the GP-35s isn't the same as that on those older GP-30s, but it appears to be. The orange on those GP-30s was much too dark a shade - too much red in it.

Here's a photo of an actual GP-35; notice the freshly painted area around the headlights (the stripes show it, too). That is the correct shade of orange, and is significantly different from that of these new Lionel GP-35s, it appears.

that looks very faded.  The loco orange also fades to a yellow orange over time.  Look at that poor engine.  I dont think it is correct to use any part of that engine for a color reference.  That has the original small logo, and the pic is from 2010, so it has been over 30years since that has had fresh paint, at the earliest.

There were also multiple oranges too.

I am very happy with the new Lionel engines and as a D&RGW fan I am very satisfied with them.  Now the only thing better is to get a few more roaqdnumbers so we can lash up 6 of these GP35's and get the train over the rockies!

The B&M paint jobs are really nice. I really like the Rio Grande units, too.

Running engines together like that really looks cool. I also run them "elephant style."

Hi Jim, I cant pull a decent train on my layout without a lashup of two powered units.  Just a single powered geep does not have enough power.  So for me I have to get the two powered units.

My LHS stated yesterday that the Rio's haven't been shipped to him as of yet.  He stated he just received the Chessie's last week.  Patiently waiting.  Thanks again for the nice shots.

ok good luck!  Now is the time to inquire, sounds like there are a few still at Lionel.  I have had my Rios for almost a month now.  Think there are still some CBQ left there too.

I think the B&M's are almost gone.  I had a very hard time finding the #1705.
