It is our first time. Looks like a lot of fun stuff to see. It appears tho the model trains are only open a couple times of the year?

The displays are in public area. They may or may not be running. They have a sensor that runs them when folks are near....but not always working.
Don't forget to check out the O. Winston Link museum. Just a short drive away. You can get a combo ticket that covers both.

It is four blocks away. It would be healthier to walk.
Definitely take the David Goode walk between the Virginia Transportation and the O. Winston Link museums. When we were last there about 3 years ago, they had a locomotive horn mounted along the walk which you could blow to "wake" the neighbors.

AHHAHA My 4 and 7 year old would love that!
The O-gauge layout is always open with the museum. There are other layouts of different scales in the basement. Those belong to various clubs and are only open to the public on certain open house days. When are you making your trip?

It's sitting outside the fence at the Museum. Funding is needed for its restoration.

Does anyone know what happened to the N&W class M2c cab no. 1151 locomotive? Are they making a static display of it and at this location and what is the status?
I haven't kept up with what number went where, but, one is in Portsmouth, VA, I think one went to Ohio, one is at the NRHS facility on 9th St. in Roanoke and one is sitting outside of the fence (and just east of 5th St. bridge) at the VMT.
The old scrap yard where your photos were taken is long gone, taken over by the prevailing medical community.

Not to get too far off track....but didn't 1218 sit in that scrap yard near what is I-581 and Elm St now?? I recall making my Dad stop on the 220 commercial by-pass to look at the 'old locomotives'.

No, those were two (2) Y6's that you saw. 1218 came back to the N&W from Steamtown and before that it and 1202 were used as a stationary steam boiler at a chemical plant.

Thanks Big Jim.......
I take it those Y6's got cut up then?? I didn't know what they were.....I was just a kid....but I knew they were TOO cool.
I've heard some steam loco were used as boilers at chemical plants around Charleston WV in chemical valley.
I do think that there was an effort to save them, but, sadly they got cut up.
Trevize, it is a fun place to visit. A great many kinds of transportation are represented, from a covered wagon to a rocket!
