Not having the item number would be like walking into an auto parts store and asking for parts without the make and model of car you drive.

Having worked in auto parts for over 32 years you have no idea how many times this happens...

Reminds me of when I worked in a hardware store and folks would come in for a glass.   I'd say what size and many times the response was "it's for a standard size basement door?"  Sometimes people have absolutely no clue.

Good thread Marty.

I have a little old modern train, it's kinda big though. It's the black one with not too a pointy cowcatcher. It goes "chitty chitty chitt..screeeee"  ever since I ran it in the rain.

So what kind of smoke fluid should I use as a soldering flux to add a capacitor for making it whistle like back it was new for the future?  ....

"What kind of car do you drive?" ....a rat rodders worst nightmares have 18 year old at a computer asking that question .

You "old guys" can grab me a Chevy 350's E.I. coil type replacement cap without the exact year and make by now I'd hope

...Any "Napa know how?" (funny commercial)

No kiding, no "young-uns"; I go right for the beard, reading glasses, and wrinkles when I hit the parts stores . I had one guy even build me a self adjusting brake hardware kit for an early VW out of Ford Escort and Oldsmobile parts when he was bored, lol.

The crossrefencing on computers is better now, but I can't count the hours I've wasted after they first took away the real parts books
