I have 3 old Premier E8s from 2002 and the lead unit likes to start up and shut down almost instantly, sometimes I can get it to move before it shuts down but the second I sound the horn or do nearly anything the engine looses power, not just looses sound or shuts down, the whole engine looses power, you can even hear the click of the watchdog signal after it dies, and then the remote looses the engine it says engine not on track and I have to delete it and read it entirely to get it to start up just so it can do the same thing again. I originally thought it was the battery which is a 2.4 volt but I replaced that and even charged the old original one but still nothing. I have no clue what this could be. The engine was in storage for about 8-9 years but before that it ran small amounts about 8 hours of run time. I am wondering if anyone has experienced this before?

you might have a battery problem or battery charging circuit problem. are you sure the rollers and wheel are very clean, sounds like your loosing power for some reason . please give us a engine item number so we can help you! check your battery and make sure engine sounds last for 7 to 10 seconds when you power off engine.

p.s. does it run normal in conventional mode without tiu?

It does not run conventionally it will not change directions and still randomly looses power especially when blowing the horn. As I said the original battery was charged and then replaced by a new one and it does keep the sounds play for 10 seconds after power cut. the rollers and wheels are clean too.

Some of the older MTH locos have a problem with the black oxide coating on the ground lead to the trucks. MTH later changed to a nickel plated ground screw. You can check this without opening the shell by checking the ground between the wheels at each end of the loco. If you don't have close to 0 ohms, remove the shell and tighten the ground screws (I actually file away the oxide coating under the head). The other thing to check is continuity between the wheels and truck block. Some truck blocks are painted and the coating interfered with continuity between it and the axle bearing.

Are these the ground screws you are talking about, just want to make sure

Yes, the black wire with the black screws are the ground leads.
