Preserving Postwar Diesels

All, I'm looking for some way to preserve my Lionel 204 Alcos. I've noticed the front end is starting to flake again and was looking for opinions.

I'd prefer not to touch up the Santa Fe freight yellow, but I don't want it to deteriorate further. Perhaps a clear coat (dull finish)?

If the engine were mine, I'd leave it alone, and just be careful not to touch the decal. I don't think there is anything you can apply that would be invisible.
