I have a Lionel 261 that the lead truck on the tender derails every time it enters a turn (O-36 FasTrack) . It seems that the wheels have a lot of back and forth play on the axle. Any suggestions for tightening up the slop?

you could replace the wheels if the holes are worn, or put something on the axles to keep the wheels from sliding in (dab of JB?)
Remove the wheel set from the truck, make a spacer fpr between the two wheels from a small diameter drinking straw. Make sure the spacer gives a little slop between the rails, but not too much. Put it together and see if that solves the problem.

Check the gauging of the wheels against the rear truck. It may be that the wheels are a little too close to each other. Also check that the truck is free to swivel properly, as is the locomotive draw bar. If there is binding anywhere, the locomotive may be pulling the front truck off the rails.

I had a similar issue with a postwar freight car, but it actually turned out to be a bent axle. HTH.
I had the same problem with my 257T...I put washers on the axles to spread the wheels...one on each side...just enough to keep the right distance...You might want to add a little weight to the tender too..
