Bruce,

Your venerable 671rr is probably in need of some basic servicing.  The brushes may need to be replaced and/or the springs need to be replaced.  While you have the engine apart it would also be a good idea to clean and shine up the commutator with an eraser and some solvent.  Also clean out the notches in the commutator with a tooth pick, straight pin or a thin sewing needle.  In most cases for a post war engine running better in one direction than another the above steps should do the trick.  If not then I would take a look at the e unit and at the very least give the E unit plunger a bath in solvent.  Hope this helps.

OKHIKER, thanks for the reply, I did give the plunger a shot of tuner and that seemed to do it.  I had cleaned it up and relubed it not that long ago so I was sort of stumped and panicked as I wanted to run it on Christmas Day. Its chugging along just fine now.  I guess it just needs to be run every once in awhile and not sit on the shelf.

Bruce
