I have an MTH PS-1 Blue Comet Premium engine in which the chip is scrambled.  I get the 3 clanks of death at startup and nothing else.  I purchased a reset kit at a reputable dealer and tried 3 or 4 times to reset the engine with no luck.  You are supposed to get 2 clanks after applying 18 volts to the engine with the reset chip in place.  I get nothing.  Again, I tried removing and replacing the reset chip at least 3 times, always the same result.  When I put the Blue Comet chip back in, I always got the 3 clanks of death so I know the speaker works.  I also know the smoke unit and headlight work but they are probably on a constant voltage board.

Now the reset kit came, not in it's original packaging but in two plastic bags with a new battery so it may have been used before and/or ruined.  It did have the MTH cardboard backing in the bag too.  Unfortunately I don't have a second PS1 engine with a scrambled chip to check the reset chip on.

Anyone have any ideas?  I made sure the chip was properly aligned and pushed in all the way each time with the 'cutoff' corner in the right location.

I am going to call the dealer tomorrow and see if they have any ideas or if I can return the reset chip.  Maybe a warranty solution?

bet it was the white battery=its proubley the older kit..

The battery is brand new and the green one.  It still had the plastic shrink wrap over the contacts.  I also charged it many hours prior to it's use with the reset chip.  The battery read 9.7v without a load on a multimeter when I installed it.

I guess the PS1 board could be dead, period where the reset chip would not help.  The engine has sat on a shelf for most of it's life, if it ever has been run.  It is not my engine but a friend's.  I try to help him out when I can, he had a stroke and has no use of his left arm.

It is necessary to do a reset 18 AFTER you have used the reset chip and replaced the original sound chip. If you are unable to do a reset 18 it is possible that the original sound chip is bad. If the original chip will not reset, a reset 18 can done using a known good chip and it doesn't have to be the same type/sound set. If you are able to do a reset 18 with a good chip, sometimes the old chip will now work even though it won't do the normal reset. Specific replacement chips can be obtained from MTH until the supply runs out. Don't forget that your track voltage should be at 10 volts or less when you first attempt to run the engine after powering up.

I just shipped the boards off to Marty to check/reset or sell me new boards.  Thanks for all the advice but everything I tried did not help.  Marty says there are actually several other reset chips that the MTH techs can get.   So we will see what happens.  I hope to get this engine running for my friend.
