There's no useful information in that video that would aid in debugging. However, I doubt it's as simple as the wick, as the motor would run and the resistors would get hot. I don't see any way to troubleshoot this in a video.
Tell him it takes in AC to the square rectifier and out puts DC. That will help him figure out how to power it. Or forward him the schematic that is posted on the forum somewhere. G
It would appear that it gets power via the spring and contact system like MTH uses for lights. So... to power it would just be a matter of applying power to the springs with an AC transformer, eh?
Yes, and many times the pads are actually marked to. It really is not hard to figure out if you can read an AC mark on rectifier and a + and -; And recognize a burned trace visually. G
