I have an SP GS4  4449 model # 20-3029 that has been upgraded to ps2. Where can I find the sound files for ps2 upgrades. This is a 3 volt system. Will those sound files listed for  sale in 2007 work on the upgrade kits. I had an earlier file for the upgrade but alas I must have erased it some time ago. Help anyone, Don

Don, Yes. Any PS-2 3V sound file will work in an upgraded engine (PS-2 3V), as long as the new file isn't larger then the memory on your board.  The upgrade files are the smaller (less than 1Meg file).  So search on GS-4 and pick a 3V file.  When you go to download it the system will let you know if it is compatible, and you can see the size of the file.

Early PS-2 3V had 1Meg memory, the newer PS-2 3V have 2Meg memory.  G

All the 3V boards in upgrade kits have been 2 meg for some time now.  Only the very early upgrade kits will be an issue with larger sound files.  The later boards started showing up later in 2007.   If you are in doubt what board you have, look at the large chip on the bottom of the processor board and it will have the word SHARP on it.

Marty,  Actually it is hit or miss.  I know there is a large supply of the 1Meg processor still.  The recent order of upgrades I got had some 1 MEG boards in there.

Most of the new 2Meg are actually flash capable, but they still put 1MEG in the kit.  Usually a AE-15/16 comes as 1MEG since it is replacing a 5V board.  G

I have over 100 upgrades under my belt and have not seen any 1 meg boards in recent kits.  They have not been made for about 6 years years.  MTH puts the kits together as the parts arrive.  This is the first I have heard of this and anything you say is gold with me.  What are your thoughts on these 1 meg boards you are seeing possibly being rebuilt boards?  I will ask Mike about this in the next day or so and get back to you.

Marty, they look new.  Probably last year I asked about the status of the PS-2 boards since there was all the swirl about the PS-3 kits, and there was that period when AE-15/16 were not in stock.  I was told there were plenty of PS-2 boards left, especially 1 Meg.

I ordered about 10 kits this last cycle and I know I had 3 or 4 1Megs.  I also know the 2Meg boards in the kit had the flash processors.  I also had one 2/3 AA battery.  I was told they ran out of the normal AA and substituted.  It actually came in handy on a tight fit upgrade.

If you order a board without sound file they send the 2Meg board.  If you order with sound file and the engine only needs a 1Meg board they will use the 1Meg board.

I am also seeing more PS-2 boards that have the flash processor.  So I think they consolidated the AE-10/14 since the cost is the same.  If you need the flash code you still have to order it.

I did get one warranty AE-10 that looked remanufactured. It used white wires for the normal black jumpers, and the board lettering was faded, with excess flux.  So it looked remanufactured to me.

The only reason I started paying attention is I have been doing some non MTH upgrades on Scale and Brass engines, so there are times I need to load a 2Meg sound file from a newer engine.   So I open all the kits and check boards so I know I have a 2 meg when I need it.  Other times I substitute in a Flash Board with quillable whistle that I maintain in stock for J, Bigboys, Hudsons, etc...   G

and that stinks.

What if you want to put in the narrow nose dash sound file that's 2 meg? I have to swap out boards and modify them from an O gauge engine to get this. They should offer the G gauge boards either way so we could get them RTR!!

GGG and Dave.  MTH confirmed they did ship some 1 meg boards klast year and a few this year.  They were new.  They are gone and everything now is 2 meg.  All three of my kits on the shelf are 2 meg.  I have done many upgrades and have not hit one (1 meg)  yet in recent years.  It would show in the loader.  Great info, thanks.
