I have a ps3 upgrade kit for diesels new in the box. I was going to use it to convert a dummy unit but have gone a different direction. I would like to use it for a 3rail steam 2- 8-2. The 3rail engine came with qsi. I have little room in the tender and know I will have to redo the harness between engine and tender. Can I put steam engine sounds on a diesel board ?

That could be problematic. The chain files for steam assume a two-board set, boiler and tender. I think you may have difficulty getting functions to work with a diesel chain file and a steam sound file.
I'd consider selling that kit and getting the steam upgrade kit.
I always wondered about that GRJ. I didn't know how the sound set could determine the board type so I figured it must be something else.
I also thought the PS3 upgrade steam kit was a single board? (PS32?)
I figure there must be something that encodes which board set is loading? (different flash or program?)
or it just doesn't matter?
The PS32 board is the basis for the steam upgrade, and it makes it look like a PS/2 board. The diesel board has different outputs and capabilities. The PS32 board has a handful of special chain file packages to personalize it to the application. It's also the board that we replace cooked PS/2 boards with, so it'll emulate PS/2 diesel or steam with the appropriate chain files and a PS/2 3V sound file.
No it can't be done and have the engine run. This has been discussed before. PS-3 Steam is a two board set and the sound file/chain file looks to communicate with a boiler board to run smoke, engine lights, and motor function. Since that board is not present with a PS-3 diesel board install it will not work right. G
George, have you ever tried a PS/2 3V sound file in the diesel board? I'm not suggesting it would work, but I'm curious what would happen. I'm guessing the chuff would be problematic at least, but I've never tried it.
You can load it, but that does not resolve the issue of the chain file and board construction. If your saying leave it as a diesel chain file and load a steam sound file, no I have not done that. Even if it worked you would not have all features and you have to wire all the outputs through a harness to the engine. Probably exceed 10 wires. What is the point? Buy a RK PS-3 Steam and swap guts. G
I agree 100% George, just curious when such questions are asked. The reason I have never tried it is I prefer to use the right board that I know will work.
Thanks guys I give up, will purchase the correct board. Assume it should be a PS32 board.
Yep, the PS32 board is the basis of the steam upgrade kit. Just buy the steam upgrade kit, you get all the bits you need for the upgrade.
