This is regarding a new, Lionel Conventional Classics NYC F3 powered A unit.

Pulmor motor, basic 3 position E-unit with Horn and Bell sounds.

The unit runs fine in the forward direction. However, when put into reverse, the unit doesn't move, even under full power.

If I gently pull the engine, by hand in the reverse direction, it will begin to move very slowly under it's own ability. It struggles for 12-24 inches, it then takes off normally.

It will continue to make laps with no issue but once I stop and cycle through the E-unit, I get the same symptom in only the reverse direction.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

These conventional classic F3s are dual motored and when they were first released many of us found that the gear boxes were completely dry without any lubricant whatsoever.  I have a set of NYC CC F3s which had one gear box lubricated while the other was bone dry.  It would only run in one direction.  I have a GG1 which had the same problem.  Check those gear boxes and if they are only minimally lubricated clean them out and re-lube them with preferably Lucas Red and Tacky but if that is not available use a white lithium grease.  After lubing they should run great.  Hope this helps.
