I just acquired a 6-31714 Acela set. Are there any batteries in the engines or cars that I need to remove?

Looking up your Acela on lionelsupport.com we find this inside the nonpowered unit, 6-18358, which is road no. 2029:
Notice the 9V battery clip.
So, yes, there could be a typical 9V battery, although it would typically only be used to keep RailSounds alive and sounding -- in order to avoid sound drop-outs if track voltage goes low at any time (if operating in conventional mode for instance). It would only be in this one unit (#2029). There would be none in the others.

Both Acela set locomotives have Railsounds, and as such both have 9v battery clips.
A BCR can be installed if desired, but you will also need the BCR charging circuit (available separately from J&W) for the BCR to charge and work properly.
Unfortunately the shell must be removed to access the battery bay; doing so requires the removal of 12 screws, the rear skirts, the nose shroud and cone, and the scale coupler. The BCR (or battery) is most useful when operating conventionally, but not required for command operation.

John,
When you say 'both' do you mean the two locomotives (powered and unpowered) that are found in set no. 6-31714?
Or is it the one locomotive (powered) that is in set, no. 6-31714 (c. 2005), and as a separate case, the one locomotive (powered) that is in set no. 2122100 (c. 2021)?

The 2021 set is a completely different set with a different command system and with 2 powered units with sound. Those no longer have the option to install a 9V battery.
However the 6-31714 has a single powered loco with sound and a second unpowered loco with sound, each with the option to install a 9V battery

This was what I was trying to get at with my questions.

However, this I did not know. After looking back at lionelsupport.com, it's clear that there are indeed two units fitted with RailSounds in this set. In addition to the nonpowered unit, 6-18358, which is road no. 2029 that I had already mentioned there's also one in the powered unit, 6-18357, which is road no. 2026, as Michael has pointed out.
@eddie g, you'll have to search for a possible battery in each of these two units.
