If I do get my 2 f conventional units converted to TMCC would I be able to use the lionel legacy controller to control my train or would I have to keep the remote for tmcc?

Yes, you can run any TMCC engines on the legacy controller ,.....stock or upgraded with ERR products.

The single, and somewhat obscure, item that doesn't work with the Legacy command system is the old TMCC PowerMaster, it receives it's signal direct from the old TMCC CAB1. There is a work-around with the Legacy PowerMaster Bridge, but unless you have the old PowerMasters, you don't need that.
Other than that, the CAB2 will do anything the old CAB1 can do and a lot more.
